Removing stock steering shaft

Fyi...instead of grinding the peening as in the video, use a cold chisel and hammer to knock the peening back. I referred to the astro shaft thread Kevin posted, and it took literally 5 minutes to get the top knuckle off.
Once it's clocked 90°, you can either re-peen it, or put a couple tack welds around it. I welded mine solid, ground it smooth to make the upper portion appear as one piece just because I'm looney!!!!

Don't do this. Modify the Astro shaft or get a '93-95 Jeep Grand Cherokee shaft.

To get the old shaft out, you can also unbolt/loosen the box from the frame until there is enough room to pull off the old shaft. New shafts go in a lot easier.
Just wondering, is there a specific reason not to just take the wheel off and put it on rotated 90 degrees?

If you were to drill out a new hole or move the button somewhere else, would that work?
No idea never had the need to do that.

but before I would do that I would try to fix it the correct way

The problem with reclocking the steering wheel is when you run across a '95 Jeep GC shafts for $7 at a Picknpull "1/2 price weekend" you have to go to the trouble of clocking it back.

To re clock the wheel you need a steering wheel puller and lock ring removal tool and you'll need to dremel teeth off the lock ring so the cam will work. Its more work than its worth to save less than $45 (what a Jeep GC shaft sells for shipped), and you've screwed your car up and someone in the future will curse you for it.

The problem with the Jeep shaft is the shaft is usually seized and the nylon lock tends to break. The Astro/Safari shafts are covered with a rubber tube so they look brand new, plus you can separate the two shafts without destroying any nylon locks

Umm... for the stock shaft knock it back up the column side, pop it off at the steering box, and then hammer it back down the column. You might have to get rough with it.

I have a 87 MC SS and I need to get the shaft replaced. The rag joint is shot... I found this on ebay - is this the shaft I keep reading about?
