Possible without being a contortionist? I'll have the heads and exhaust off so I would just have to drop the pan to have access to the bottom end. But, is there enough room with that cross member there?

not unless you tilt the motor back to clear the crossmember. With all that work wouldn't you want the cylinders honed true at least ??

And therein would be the problem. It is possible to remove the pan with the engine in the car, but by the time you get that far, you're only a few bellhousing bolts and an engine hoist away from just pulling the motor. You'll be glad you did.

Just checking out my options. I am not set up right now to pull the engine and don't want to be until I move this summer. I had to pull the heads because of a broken exhaust bolt and because the surface where it fits the exhaust manifold needs to be resurfaced. At first I was thinking I would go ahead and recondition the heads and possibly replace the rings but now I think I will just clean up the heads and button the engine back up. I'll pull the engine and do the complete job some other day.

It's possible but is not fun! Unless you have a broken ring, I wouldn't even bother with it if you're not going to redo the whole thing. Clean them heads up, put some new head gaskets on there and let her eat

I agree. As a point of interest in car overhauls were the norm in the 50’s and 60’s , even dropping the crankshaft out with the block in the car was not unheard of. From personal experience, if you’re working alone you really get a work out reinstalling the pistons from the top then crawling underneath to install the rod caps and doing it all over again 7 more time.

I'm changing my oil pan and I wouldn't even consider trying that if I wasn't going to remove the engine..

That settles that then. I am glad I got some opinions before I went and got into something too deep. Thanks guys.

No need to remove the motor, unless you were already planning on doing some other work with it out...
If you've got access to a lift, getting the oil pan in and out isn't that bad of a job at all.
A one-piece pan gasket makes it a snap.
I did it a couple times when my 442 had a SBC in it.
