They just measure them to make sure all the cylinders are completely round with a micrometer. Your mechanic should do it for free if you're buyin stuff from him and he's helping with it. I guess whenever you cleaned it up you checked for scratches on the walls? You can get away with having the mains, for the crankshaft, a little scratched up but you really should get that checked whenever you rebuild it next.
Edit: It really isn't one of those 'too late' things, you really should have it checked. Yes it's more work, but if they find something...you just have to remember you're building a controlled bomb ya know. And you'll be really pissed if you get finished and it breaks a rod or burns a piston after 10,000 miles, I should know.
