Haven't found a DX engine close enough to me to build. But I stumbled across this SBC 400 I can tinker with this winter. It was all stock never been rebuilt. It's the 509 block 2 bolt main. From what I can tell after the research I did this block is supposed to be stronger then the 4 bolt Main block. Plan is to put in all forged Eagle rotating assembly and keep it as a spare. I already cleaned the block and getting it ready for the Machine shop.

Could machine for 4 bolt splayed caps. And you are correct its stronger than a four bolt as they didn't add any extra webbing to the 400 four bolt resulting in stress cracks

I personally haven't had good luck w/ 400's, have cracked 2. The last one I built was a 2 bolt w/ 2 freeze plugs like yours. I hard blocked it up to the front freeze plugs, ran great till I sold to a friend and to my knowledge it's still running.

I built a 400 and just put it in my 85 monte carlo ss, I put vortec heads on it with a nice cam. It is a beast, I just put the stock crank and pistons in it also. I can run 87 octane gas with no problems and its around 400 hp with 436 ft lbs of torque. It will burn the tires as long as you hold it.
I like it and I had all the parts laying around from other builds and only had 185.00 in it. Id say build it and you will be pleased.

Greetings LilBowTie & all; I'm taking a our conversation public if that's Ok as we really didn't talk about any thing that required a PM? Awesome another survivor! We really didn't cover the Bronze Brick much in our previous conversations. But I'm some what familiar with the 400 SB Chevy as I'm on my 3rd one with a spare in the corner. Bang for the buck their hard to beat. After building two with cheep parts I didn't want to build a 4th. So the only Chevy part in the 3rd one is the block! First one was back in 85, second one 95 & the 3rd one built in 04 is still Running well after an upper end re-fresh back in 2014. The one thing I've learned is they make enough power to hurt them self's. Some where around 450 lbs Ft of torquer you will break a GM main cap, doesn't matter if it is four bolt or two bolt. It will crack into the nearest bolt hole to the crank. So Mag the GM caps or just bite the bullet & get some Eagle 4 bolt Splayed tool steel caps. Main problem solved for ever. But then if you run 12 to 1 compression you will find the next week point. And don't forget some serious rods, ya sure don't want one to brake after spending all that money machining the block? If I do ever build another 406"er I would turn the rod journals down to the earlier 1967 2.0" diameter. Reducing the weight & parabolic losses uncured by the larger 2.10" rods that are now the norm. Take care Ole' Bob.

Picked up these Billet Main caps and ARP hardware. Also worked on the lifter valley some more and added vent tubes. Need to have the machine work done so I can assemble it.
