school me on an engine swap

That's not going against the grain, that's going with the herd. You can't do anything with a sbc that hasn't been done 10,000 times. Kickass would be 600hp big block chevy or Ford or mopar etc. Or a new generation something with turbos.

I cut hair and if I go against the grain my hair and I look retarded...olds motor is the right way to go

I say, try to aim for 500+hp under the hood with a/c! I've seen too many people on here where they delete the a/c! I guess I find it a lil' too extreme considering this is my daily driver, I live in Texas and driving without a/c is Suicide! I dont care how much HP my motor produced, AIR CONDITIONING IS A MUST! Simply rolling down the widow while driving is not enough. So, with all that being said, I think a 350-500hp car with a/c is a good deal!

I vote for Olds in an Olds, but that's just me anyway. I've put Pontiacs and Buicks into Chevies and vise/versa and the chore of swapping all the little stuff just isn't worth it to me.

I agree I love AC and if it is a little tougher to meet your other goals so be it. I will never buy a street car that does not have AC unless I can pick it up for stupid cheap because no one wants it without the AC.

Both my builds were near 500 HP on pump gas with AC. But it is hard to do as you either need big cubes so that you don't have so much cam relative to your displacement that it doesn't make enough vacuume to support AC & power brakes etc. Or you need turbos & an intercooler even then with my little motor I needed methanol injection to do it on pump gas.

In order to use my existing gbody AC with the Caddy I had to hunt down an 80/81 Cad 368 (same block as the 500) for its brackets as GM had already moved to the r4 compressor so it made it a near bolt up.

New here with a cutlass

What do I need to know about swapping out the 307 for something more powerful? Do I need to keep it olds or switch to a chevy block? The prior owner of my cutlass replaced the original trans with a 350.
I'll be vote # 5,847 for keeping an olds in an olds! I used a 455 in mine, a big block olds is an easy swap, I had to cut my heater box for my tall-*ss valve covers but if you run stock height ones you'll be good. A small block is the same !00% as your 307, everything(brackets and all) will work with a 350-403 olds, heres the link for mine:

Leave da chebbys for da montes! :puke:

Hotrod I checked out your Olds page. Great job on your 455! Sucks that somebody got the 8.5 out of it. I dig the valvecovers. Check out my 442 in my pics.

Hypothetically speaking...If I was to swap for a 350 sbc, is there anything else I would have to change besides the motor mounts and transmission? I've heard that some olds trans have bolt patterns for both olds and chevy. Is a th350 my best choice for a transmission? What if I want overdrive?

IMHO, a 200-4R (overdrive transmission)...there has been a lot of discussions on here about which is better, a 200-4R, or the 700R, although depending on your power, you may want to upgrade either with stronger internals. It (200-4R) comes in a dual-bolt pattern (IIRC)..

Just keep it hypothetical! If you have driven and liked a cutlass with overdrive at all, you will hate the TH350 3 speed, stick with the OD 200r4... 5-10 years ago, I would've agreed that the 700s may have been a more durable choice, but definitely not anymore! It seems the hardcore chevy guys are always the ones to push the 700 on me and tell me my 200r4 is junk. If you are still set on downgrading to a 3 speed, spend like $25 more and find a TH400(a bit stronger and still cheap)
