I am running a BUICK 350 in this car so I know its a torque monster, if that makes any difference in your suggestion.

Buicks peak at lower RPM. I would use the 3.42. Sometimes less is more.

THat is what I decided to go with the 3:42. I finished it up today and put some Royal Purple in her. It turned out very nice. Now for the 2004r

Re: So I finally found a 8.5" rear 10 bolt from Grand Nation

Sorry to thread jack but i just put a big ten in my monte and i had a few questions. My drive shaft will not fit into the rear and i want to know how short i have to cut it to make it work? I am running a th350 btw, I also would like to know what size rims and tires i could run. My new rear has 4.56 gears so i would like a to run the tallest tire i can and i believe the widest i can run is a 8 so does 275/60/15 sound about right? And what rim size would i need to run the widest and tallest tire?

I did not rebuild the clutch packs they were ok. I guess when I refer to rebuild, I tore everything apart inspected the bearings, and gears cleaned it up replaced all the seals backing paltes, hardware, etc and gave it a paint job.

You need to take an inch off the drive shaft, or find one from a 442, T-Regal/GN. 275 is about the largest size tire I have seen run on the cars without modifying. Rim size, yes 15X8 look nice with that set up

toby is right, 1inch shorter on the driveshaft. also 275/60/15 will fit but are super snug. youll have to run them on 15x8 with around 4" backspace and maybe a 3/8" or 1/4" spacer.

toby you prolly made the best decision going to the 3.42 with the olds motor. should get yah where your want. I know the feeling though i wanted a 3.73 so bad and got a deal on the 3.42 and said hell i ant changing the gears till i try em. If i aint happy with em imma skip over 3.73 most likely straight to a 3.90. thats with a muncie 4 speed and little to no highway use.

cool thanks, i got the drive shaft cut an inch and it fits like a glove. I bought some 15x8 weld prostars with 3.5 inch backspacing which i hope will work, and some nitto 555r 275/60/15. I hope that the taller tire will cut the 4.56 gears down a bit to make it more street able.
