Spark Plug Wires

if you read the article I posted the link to said there is no gain using a low resistance wire. Your wire may suppress the RFI but what about the EMI which is more important than suppressing RFI

http://www.magnecor.com/magnecor1/truth.htm

RFI & EMI is the same thing...

As far as different specified wires goes, I think that most quality wires are just as good performance wise. There really isn't much of a difference at all. IMHO, as long as it's a quality wire that's durable, you should be all set..

we used a DUI distributor in one of circle track cars when we had to use an HEI by the rules. That distributor worked great and was tweaked for the set up we had by DUI. They make great products.

An HEI is a great distributor for a street car and is all that's really required. The custom DUI units last forever too..

they are not the same, EMI can be referred to as RFI depending on the frequency but the RFI is never referred to as EMI. EMI can also interfere if there is physical contact like between two spark plug wires which we refer to as induction. If you suppress the EMI frequency you are also suppressing the RFI but you don't suppress the EMI by suppressing the RFI.

I agree with you on your comment about the wires

I have the "regular" 8.5 mm MSD wires on the big block. I love the multi angle boots. I melted one boot to the header on cam break in, pulled it off, wrapped it in electrical tape and it was fine. I have since replaced that wire but no other issues here. My dad has had the same wires in his 68 4-4-2 for the last 9 years with no issues either.
I had the Superconductor wires crack #1 wire twice due to heat when I was having issues with my 403. After the switch to the Accel wires, no issues. If anything Accel wires are better these days, they were junk years back. I am using those MSD wires on the Dakota, since I could shorten that cracked wire enough for the narrower 360 magnum which has heat blockers at the spark plugs.

The only issue I ever had with HEI was pick up coils dying out of the blue. Good to hear about the DUI distributors. I finally found a factory distributor with a very aggressive timing curve on my Olds 260 of all things. I never found one with factory weights that would add so much timing at idle even with the lightest springs.

The problem with HEI is the heavy coil on to of the distributor cap. The weight of the coil can cause the cap to move under heavy acceleration, braking and cornering. Other than that it's a great distributor and the DUI will teak it according the engine specs and the style of driving you do. DUI also has an HEI cap that prevents the wires from crossing at the distributor cap.

Interesting. Either way the are a high quality wire that only suppress RFI. Maybe I will keep the half NGK and half dual core wires on the 260. Also spark plug aren't created equal, I say NGK are the best of the common brands. Autolite and AC Delco's are not as good since being made in China.

I just removed the NGK TR5 and replaced them with US made Delco, never liked how the engine ran with the NGK. You can still find US and Mexican made Delco plugs in the retail stores...

If anything I found NGK plugs ran smoother in my Olds V8's. My current 260 runs really nice with the Delco's though.

we used the NGK on the 602 and 604 crate engines in out circle track cars and they ran great but for some reason my sbc didn't like them. This winter I plan to put a new set of rings in and maybe change the pistons to increase the compression a bit. I still have the NGK so I might try them again next year since these Delco I have right now are a higher heat range. On a side note my son was surprised I was changing my plugs again this summer and asked how much the plugs were. When I said $22.00 he asked if that was each....he likes his high priced luxury cars but his jaw dropped when I said it was for all 8.....🙂

I feel his pain... When you have to replace almost anything on a BMW you ask yourself if the inherent tight handling is really worth it.
