Well guys I never seem to get done the things I want to.i think it's because there's so much to do I have to do like 6 things to do what I started out to do. Anyway the tail gate is still not mounted but I did mount a vice on the bumper a frnd of mine bought a bed for his 87 Chevy of Craigslist and I spent the afternoon picking it up for him with my trailer. We stopped at harbor freight on the way back and he bought me the vice.

I did figure out how I'm mounting the gate and latching it some cheep hood pins old Chan pipe and angle iron

I'm going to push my luck with the town and leave it in the driveway for now so I can button up small stuff during the week after work

Oh and the other thing that slowed me to a crawl today is the welder died I'm thinking it's water in the fuel really crushed me tho I was all set up to use the new toys and it just kept stalling. Oh well as cheep as it was I got to expect some problems

No letters from the town yet. Lol I kept with the keep it simple stupid method tonight. I used a set of cheesy hood pins for latches. For chain I used some I had laying around. First I bent a 45° in the end links and welded them to the hood pins to act as a spacer and hold up the gate when it's open I hammered the Chevy gate tabs flat with a little heat for the pins to go threw set the gate in place with some shims under it and drilled the quarters for the pins. I still need to make the hinges and a brace for inside the box but there's not much light after work these days so here's what's done

Tomorrow I'll try to get the hinges done and move on it's probably the roughest gate I ever tried to use but it's nostalgic and I like it. However getting it ready for paint is going to suck!

I'm getting some work done today it's wired for trailer lights but not brakes yet I need a controller I did find a nice trailer plug at the store that fit the hacked hole in the bumper so it worked out goodView attachment 73893 mounted the welder with new stainless steel hardware and grounded it to the body. Also dropped the tank again and ran a new ground for it. Hooked up the wires for the fuel gauge ....I think it's still untested. Then I started playing with a tail gate.... I'm not sure what I want to do. I have been thinking to much again and I may just mount it as is. It's a beat up 61 flee side gate off of my uncle's first truck. I was going to cut it up make it smaller and customize it but it kinda looks ok the way it is what do you think?View attachment 73898 the tape is were I was thinking of cutting it but it's going to be a work table so I may need the size
That tailgate would look awesome recessed into the bed and painted to match the cab.

Yes it would my original idea was to get the ends of the quarter panels off a 60-66 Chevy with the hinges and Tig them on but I haven't found any
Don't forget that it's a work truck. If you make it too pretty, you'll spend more time worrying about it than your job.

Tonight after work it was raining like hell so not much got done. When I pulled into the driveway I noticed my neighbor left me a pice of pipe for the hinges so I cut what I needed off of it and welded it to the the angle iron in the rain. Sorry no pictures like I said it was raining I'll probably glass bead them and drill some holes tomorrow after work
