Ok so I've been running and burning the candle at both ends and don't remember what I last posted so.. last night on my way to Jackson it was running horrible breaking up pinging not excepting fuel I even had to stop and work on it in a Wawa parking lot. I was figuring it to be a ignition issue. When I got to the building I picked threw the junk hei pile and put one together with what I thought might be good. Yeah no good. No spark. So I stole the distributor out of Jack's 71 Chevelle SS again (it's better to ask forgiveness than for permission) bam fire in the hole! Then I found that the hacked wiring was another problem no power to choke. So it got a temporary hot from the battery. Crappy but effective. Then I pulled the left valve cover to fix the leak and found it was all bent to hell. I beat it around put it back on and it still leaks. This morning I ordered a brand new distributor off Amazon. It should be here tomorrow. I got my alternator pulley from our good friend on Long island today and it looks like it should work. So Sunday when I'm back from maple Grove I've got some serious work to do including oil and temp sensors. May even rebuild the q-jet I have a kit for it. Now I need to gather up some crap for the swap meet and get a shower before I go meet a guy about the mustang and load the trailer for tomorrow. These 6:00am to 12:30 days of non stop are starting to catch up with me. I hope Eric drives tonight.

I'm made it to work again today. I think something is wrong with that carburetor though like it's not pulling the metering rods closed at idle. I need to get time to mess with it.
How big is the cam? How much vacuum are you pulling? It could be too stiff of a spring or a bent metering rod, I have done that before.

Try some Ultrablack overnight or the Right Stuff if you need sooner and glue the cover to gasket. On chrome and aluminum covers either straight RTV or rigid carrier rubber gaskets are the way you have any hope of not leaking.

I don't think they've ever seen oil. Got home and the new distributor was here so tomorrow is going to be a big day.

What now?

Over the last few days I've worked myself to death trying to get it to run correctly and the only good thing that came from it all is I now know what the problem was. Well is kinda. It's junk! My oil looks like some of the tints at work. My brand new cam and lifters are junk it sounds like a diesel and the motor is coming back out this weekend. The bottom end will probably be wiped out by then because I'm still driving my 6 cylinder 454 as it's my only vehicle. Eric has a used 454 that we never heard run but he was told it's from a suburban with 90k that ran ok. It was pulled and put on a stand at a chicken coop in Howell and no one has messed with it since the fire. The building it was in burned down and it was picked from the ashes and debris when the fire department left. So I'm going to wire brush that b*tch paint it orange and send it .... I hope. It's just a loner to buy me time to make a few bucks for my rebuild if it doesn't land me in divorce Court first
