Steering wheel/column rattle

Actually, there are two rattles, the one sounds like it is in the cowl area (like you suggested), and the other is definitely in the steering wheel area. I was going to ask about the other one eventually too, so thanks!

I put grease on the center rear hood stop and the cowl rattle seems to have gone away.

The column rattle is still there and is getting worse. At first it just started to rattle, but over time the wheel/column has started to shake in my hands over bumps. It doesn't feel very safe. It definitely wasn't like that when I bought it two years ago with 73,000 miles (now at 89,700 miles). Another thing I noticed was that over bigger bumps, like railroad tracks, it feels like the driver's side front wheel is wobbling. That's probably another issue altogether, but when you combine both symptoms, it is kind of scary feeling.

rattle

you need to check out your steering linkage and front end suspension, if you don't know how take it to firestone or some other shop... jesse

it's time to park the car until you find out the problem......

Checked the suspension, ball joints and tie rod don't have any play in them. The sloppiness appears to be where the relay rod connects to the idler arm and pitman arm on either side. I don't know what needs replaced. I'm guessing the idler arm and/or pitman arm should be replaced. Would changing out parts here require an alignment and/or special tools?

is this a tilt column?

Does it have the GM collumn wobble? (wheel moves around when locked into position - sometimes several inches) if so could be one of the bolts that hold the tilt unit to the column body has worked its way loose & come out completely. this might explain the noise getting progressively worse.

It might be that, but maybe in a very early stage. Basically, the column feels/sounds like it is rattling somewhere over bumps. It doesn't really move at all, except maybe like millimeters from vibrations, definitely not inches.

What I think is happening is that the worn steering component pieces are causing the vibration. I noticed if I hold the center of steering wheel when the rattle/vibration occurs, the rattle goes away. The rattle comes back just as soon as I let go.
