I got a new single din Kenwood for Christmas and I'm trying to figure out how to mount it. The pics are of a very crude mock-up for an old stereo. Would the way I mounted the old one work? From what I can gather from the universal install kits, they just hang off of the dash, like the one I made before.

Pretty much the same thing. What does it look like with the bezel on tho? Think the only diff would be that the universal kit would be in black plastic. Guess it just depends on the look your going for.

I plan on only having the faceplate and trim piece around it sticking out of the bezel, so that's all you'll see. I made a piece of sheet metal that covers the whole radio area and I'll just cut the hole accordingly.

Sounds like pure ingenuity 😀

I'd rather build something than buy it any day

X2: I also prefer to fabricate. the end product is what you actual want and can take more ownership of your ride by the personalization only you can create.

Sometimes I have to make the damn part couple times or more before I get it the exact way I want.

Especially if it's something as simple as this. Here's what it should look like when finished, but the aluminum will either be painted or brushed. Not sure yet.

Looks good. I usually only fabricate when I have to(ie price is crazy or they don't make a part).

I did something similiar except with plexiglass. I learned the hard way you need extra support for the rear of the deck but you were smart and made a brace for it already. Looks like the same radio as mine...
