When I first bought my car it had and aftermarket Realistic 8-Track player and factory speaker in dash none in rear. This stereo played fine minus the bad sound from the old and worn speakers. I first replace the stereo (brand new JVC) then a week later the speakers. The speaker were the stockish 3.5 (raptor brand?) speakers from AutoZone which were a direct replacement. This set up worked perfectly and was very loud. Water shorted out the speaker on the passenger side and the setup still played good for another month. Then nothing at all, no sound what so ever the stereo was still working but no sound. If I took the fuse out and put it back it back it would work on low volume for maybe 5 minutes and stop again. Weeks later I found a factory Delco AM/FM stereo and installed it in my car in the parking lot and it worked on low volume the whole 45 minute trip home. When I found out there was another part you can turn behind the channel knob I turned it up and made it louder and then again no sound. It now will play for like 5 minutes after I start and then silence. Has any one else had this problem or know how to fix it. My car is 78 Regal and the stereo is a factory Delco AM/FM that I've added an AUX port to if that helps the problem solving any.

If I'm reading your post correctly, you have front speakers only, no rears. The control that's stacked behind the station selector knob is the front/rear fader control. Delco radios don't like being turned up with no speaker load. El Caminos, which have no rear speakers, used the same radio with the fader control turned all the way to full front and a dummy ring behind the station selector knob that spun free. First, make sure you have it wired correctly. One of the connector plugs will have tan, grey, light green and dark green wires. That's your front speaker connector. Tan and grey are left front, the two greens are right front. The connector plug with yellow, brown, light blue and dark blue wires is for the rear speakers. If you're wired OK, power the radio up and turn the little notched sleeve around the shaft until it stops, counter-clockwise IIRC. That should give you full power to the front speakers, none to the rear. If you haven't hurt the radio permanently by operating it without speakers it should be OK.
