I'm actually hearing rumblings about Crane not actually being done for like alot of sources said. From what I understand they are re-structuring and will be back in bussiness.

if its not you can always silicon the two extra bolt holes, and supposedly, edelbrach makes a gasket for people running this combination.
any more info on this? And what effect would siliconing the bolt holes do? I would imagine nothing, but I would like to be sure.

Well, the Vortec head bolt pattern is completely different from the standard SBC pattern, and is more like a Ford Windsor. The bolts drop in vertically, and do not bolt in on an angle like the old Chevy heads. Silicone alone will not fix this issue, you would have to drill and tap new holes in the heads to use an old style intake.

Some good recommendations here. Ask five different people about which heads and cam and you'll get five different answers. So let me throw mine into the mix. I use the Edelbrock RPM heads and a Lunati Voodoo 268 cam:

# Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
# Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227
# Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .468/.489
# LSA/ICL: 112/108

I had a Comp 268 but it was too noisy, after some research i found some people who had the same problem while others had no noise. After checking over everything I decided to change out the cam. Best decision I made. Its a lot better fitment with my setup. But really it depends on what the rest of your setup is. what type of trans, rear gear ratio, intake etc....

Well if your looking at having good driveability, but having a good amount of HP then here are my recommendations:

-Summit 442 int./ 460 exh. (comes with lifters)
-A good set of regular 202 heads will work great (Don't have to be an expensive brand or anything like that)
-Edelbrock performer intake
-Edelbrock 600 cfm carb (electric choke)

This is the set up I'm running on my 80 Malibu that has a 350, standard bore. The car gets between 350 and 400 HP, and maintains between 15 and 18 mpg. I'm running 373 auburn posi gears on the car and it gets that good of gas mileage. The summit cam comes with lifters and costs $90. It gives the car a really nice lope and a great sound from the flowmaster exhaust. Most people will tell your that my 442 lift cam is a "baby" cam, but it's a great balance for gas mileage economy (being that gas prices can shoot right back up) and still gives plenty of power to put street cars in their place. Most people that listen to my car think its a big block before they even see the motor and realize its a small block. With this set up you can pull 13 to 13.5 sec. in the quarter mile easily when tuned correctly.

thanks all, appreciate the info.
I'm prolly just gunna look for some standard heads, tho there is a set of nice 327 heads for cheap near me, so I may scoop those up and go withthe summit 442 cam, toss in crane rockers, and then start saving for my bottom end. It's gunna be costly, but I'm going all forged, minus the pistons, likely goin with hypereutectics that are said to be good for 500hp or 8000rpm, neither of which this engine will see. Gettin a set of g-body sbc headers for $40, thanks craigslist, on Tuesday. Holy crap I may reach my goal of gettin the whole mess done before summer is over!
