Also after speaking with wrongful termination lawyers they all basically said anyone can fire you for any or no reason. Extremely hard to win a case like that. I do feel for OP and others in these situations

Union or non-union doesn't really matter.
What matters is who is in charge and the fact of the matter is unless you have made the sacrifices to start your own company you are at the mercy of other people.
Right or wrong, it is what it is.

As far as the big bad corporations are concerned.... anyone own stocks?
Because if you do, rest assured you're a factor in every single termination performed by the companies you own stock in.

So, if you really hate the corporate setup, sell your stocks and stop participating.

As a shop steward for too many years I too have seen the good and the bad. As stated, guys getting away with murder is managements fault. As is under-the-table pay-offs and bribes. Too many bosses are eager to take a sweet Christmas "gift" in return for a (fill in the blank) favor. Once when I complained to the boss about his smelly deals he responded "You can have a deal too". I always loved it when the deal imploded and the guy wanted me to "fix" it. Anyway my point is that a union has only one job. To use collective bargaining to negotiate a contract and then enforce it. It is not there to protect your smelly boss deals that go south or to wipe your butts. Bad union? Vote them out. No union? Start one. Don't want one? Fine. But don't belittle others that do.

that is true but in this case he was fired for cause,

he was only off a few weeks when they terminated him
he was only off a few weeks when they terminated him
Whatever happened was legal. He is not even trying to dispute that. His problem was the way it was carried out.

Its really sad and in all reality I don't need to be bringing any extra commentary, not why Im here, feel bad for his family

Im backing out...

Well im going to put my 2 cents in on this subject , I live in Georgia we to are a so called [right to work state ] WHAT A JOKE THAT NAME IS ! . What it really means like others here have said is a company can fire you for any / or no reason at all ! And basically with no recourse what so ever ! A lot of what bonnewagon said is true about the union being the reason for 8 hr workdays and vacation and don,t forget safety issues as well ! Almost every single safety law and rule we have now came off the broken back of a union worker ! [ back in the day ] . I never worked for one myself , i had a chance onetime while living in NJ but they basically wanted me to start my career over as a apprentice after welding for almost 10 years couldn't see doing that so i didn't . As far as starting a union in the south , good luck with that ! Yes we have a few , manly small and weak . The corporations here beat the awfulness of the UNION from the time kid,s are in grade school , it,s right up there with calling your mother a wh*re . And until recent years some employers would actively seek out any one even talking about a union ! With all that said i surely hope for the best for the guy this happened too , sorry to hear it and you will be in our prayers !

I'll start with this one from my buddy's kids who both worked at a local Walmart. His daughter got fired for not working fast enough after returning from having a complicated pregnancy (4'11" having a 12+ lbs boy) even with proper paper work from her doctor. Then his boy (the guy who covered all the slackers shifts caused they called off for being stoned) had the flu, seen the doctor & had the note & still was fired while getting over the flu. They did offer him his job back but he alreay found a new one for how ling it took to fix the mistake.
Now I've have been in two other unions (now in my third) & had bad experiances with both. The first the boss was giving me hell for my military duty (wanting me to work Saturdays then go to drill when done, giving my one week for two week training periods, then having a fit for me doing extra military duty when there wasn't any work for long time frames) & refused a doctors note from being sick a few days. We didn't have a local steward so we had the state steward cover us but that person & the boss were super close friends that their families did things together so needless to say... The last job was the other & all they saw me (& the others who were kept as "temps") only as a cash source. They wouldn't fight to get us permanent status, benefits, new positions as our field was phased out, or cover us if need would come up but took our dues every pay. We didn't get vacation time until a few company bosses pushed for it & they fought it. I'm hoping the third is better since it covers those who really work for the tax payers.
I think both sides stink when it comes to protecting/doing something for the employees. But there are those on both side who do try but someone above them maybe the reason for the negative views. Then there are the employees who just abuse the system & makes everyone look bad.
