Texas82GP's GMT900

The only thing that helped my messed up L5-S1 disc was surgery. They did a microdiscectomy and a laminectomy. Basically they cut some disc material out and ported/polished the vertebrae to get rid of the interference with the sciatic nerve. Is your pain nerve related or muscle spasm related? That would likely be a different treatment.
Nerve related. It hurts from the base of my neck through the meat of my right shoulder, in the arm/shoulder joint and down the right arm all the way to the wrist. I'm not too excited about the prospect of surgery but I can't live like this the rest of my life.

I get flack over wanting to use a 4l80e behind a 5.3. But the logic of building once & building HD seems solid to me. I'll have to go back through & see if you have more info on the cam & other changes as I'm not recalling them @ the moment. Getting older does suck.
I don't think the cam swap is detailed. Just a GM Performance Parts LS Hot cam 219/228, .525/.525 on a 112.

It's a small cam but is great with the 3600-3800 RPM stall converter and 4.10 gears. I did it and swapped the converter for the 4L65E in my driveway back in 2012. Otherwise it has Long tube headers and a Borla cat-back. It's too heavy to call fast but it is quick and fun.

Recovery from my procedure is 10x better than getting a fusion.

Thanks for the testimonials friends. I really appreciate them. I don't know what I'm going to do but your good experiences have me more open to seeing the surgeon that my doctor referred me to.

I was looking @ that GM 'Hot' cam & the BTR 'NSR' 224/230 .500"/.500" 109 LSA cam. Mild enough but more than stock.

Doing the 5.3 route lets me make the sbc to LS change & spend the money to help keep the engine compartment looking old school w/the new tech. Once things are established, then I can do a stroker 408 (or larger) w/o having to change everything again & why I figured just start w/a 4l80e out of the gate.

The internet echo chamber says there are tons of better cams out there and it leaves tons of power on the table.

When I bought the Hot Cam I had a couple of buddies at a Chevrolet dealership and they cut me a good deal. Also, with .525 lift and production valve springs, longevity in my daily driver was not a concern.

Oh yes agreed.... There's usually (always?) something better.

But, probably like you, I'm not trying to be a trend-setter nor keep-up w/said echo chamber. Just trying to have a pleasant sounding combo that does the A-to-B grind while putting a smile on the face of the loose nut behind the wheel. Imagine your 5.3 moving 1500lbs less pork.....

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Just give it a good amount of stall speed.

Sorry to hear about the back. Personally, I'd avoid surgery if at all possible. My back has been destroyed in several ways over the years. Car accidents, motorcycle accidents, repetitive heavy lifting, general reckless behavior, you name it. A good massage therapist and chiropractor can change your life. Hope you get sorted.
