Texas82GP's GMT900

So I've been trying to decide what to do about my cracked dash. If you didn't know, cracked dashes are a thing with GMT900's. I've had a sun shield on the dash since I noticed the first crack, and that was probably over 10 years ago. It had five or six cracks in it now, one of which on the driver's side is pretty long. My passenger air bag needs to have the inflator changed since it is a Takata unit and is part of that huge recall. I've been hesitant to do it since I don't want the dash busted up any worse than it is. I've done a lot of research in the past few weeks. buying a new dash panel is something like a $650 proposition and from what I've read and seen, it isn't an improved design and it will eventually crack. I think I am going to put a cap on it to help hold it together and try to keep it from getting worse.

In the course of researching what to do on the dash, I learned that I could easily add the Driver's Information Center buttons to my truck. My truck, being an SLE, not a SLT didn't come with them. I learned that the wiring harness is there and the module has all the functionality, GM just put a different panel with no buttons in the mid and lower level trim trucks. Thanks GM. Putting in this functionality is something I've long wanted to do, I just didn't realize it was this easy. I put it in today. You can get a cheap aftermarket panel with the buttons but I went ahead and bought the Genuine GM unit.

Almost 6000 hours on the engine. That figures to roughly 7.7 hours a week....

I figured something like 12k-14k gallons of gas burned. It doesn't go that high....

This one surprised me. I didn't think it would be this good....

It shows other things like individual tire pressures and you can adjust entry and exit lighting, chime volume, etc. Not a big deal but it's kinda neat to have this functionality. I wish I had know about it sooner.
The DIC buttons should of been standard at all levels. When I got my '08 Silverado Z71 it took three months to say hell with it & grabbed GM unit. One thing I didn't like was I couldn't reset the engine hours after the original 5.3 was replaced.

yeah, I've got that in my '08, it's nice to have. but what I'd really like to do is convert the stupid ceiling mic from OnStar to pair with my phone . have you seen a conversion like that?

No I haven't. I can't say I'm out on the forums for that truck though. Also, the exhaust system on my truck is too loud for talking on the phone. We put an inexpensive aftermarket Kenwood stereo in my brother's 02 Sierra and it has a mic and pairs with his phone for hands free calls.

I totally agree. I guess it was just one of those GM marketing deals. I didn't know everything was there except for the buttons themselves or I would have done this a long time ago. When I bought my truck in 08, the work truck trim level trucks didn't even have oil pressure and volt gauges. Very cheeseball. Thanks GM.

Gotta have a reason to pony up for the higher trim level or else what's the point? This scenario is a total precursor to the software based options of today though.

Maybe they didn't want you to see the oil pressure for a reason on some of these trucks......

When I picked my 2012 Sierra off the lot it didn't have the remote start. It was an option I really didn't want to give up from my 08. Apparently any of these trucks with RKE only needed new remotes paired with the remote start. It ended up costing me about 60 bucks more than ordering the factory option.

If it's like the wife's Envoy, the oil pressure gauge is nothing more than a lie-o-meter fed by the PCM with whatever it has calculated the oil pressure to be.

I like adding factory options. Nice little touch with the DIC. With over 200k miles, 6k engine hours seems to be on the low side of average.

Thanks for schooling me. I have a new fob with remote start on order. I don't think it is something I'll use much, but I'm with Joe. I like adding factory options. It's what my Dad taught me.

I bought it towards the end of March of 2008 (March Madness was the promotion). The average speed of my commute is 30 MPH, despite it mostly being on the highway. The truck has done a little sitting. It sat parked up when I did the 4L85E swap. It was down for short periods of time for the two times the 4L65E was overhauled before that. I'm guessing it was down a month or maybe two when I did the cam and torque converter swap so it hasn't gone to work every week since purchased new.

My truck is part of the Takata airbag recall. I've hesitated to take it to the dealer for the recall because my dash is cracked in three places by the passenger airbag. I don't really want my dash busted up worse and I don't really want to turn my truck loose to total strangers at the dealer. I need to address the recall before I put the dash cap on. For the money, I decided to do the repair myself, like most things. I went to the dealer this afternoon and bought the inflator. The truck is in the storage out in Willis right now. I got the Roadmaster out on Sunday so it would get driven some. It's been sitting for around 10 weeks. Anyway, I'll likely go get the truck and do the airbag repair this weekend.....
