TH400 mpg with 455 and 200-4r horror stories?

I think the 4L80 plus the $600 controller and the rest of the parts to make it work might be a headache.

The Gear Vendor units have proven themselves on the Hot Rod Power Tour time and again. A GV unit and a TH400 will last as long as the motor. Plus the GV units come in under direct and over, as well as direct and over.

Basically you need a billet foward drum and welded on shaft that is $400 in itself. The upgraded sun shell and stator come in any build. Add quality frictions, deep pan, 10 vane pump, shift kit like the big Transgo which comes with bigger boost valves and a billet servo, you are most of the way there. Check out CK Performance, he sells all the billet parts and mentions in the description at what power level they are needed. Dr Dan, Dan Mascal on Real Olds Power, buys all his parts from there and builds these trans for Olds V8 torque, his 83 H/O is in the 11's. Not sure how busy he is.

The thought of a $2500 questionable 200-4R VS. an $850 bulletproof TH-400 is what steered the decision with my 442.
Depending on conditions, I usually get around 8-12 mpg with my 455/TH-400/3:73.
Now that the TH-400 is already in my car, I'd rather spend $2500 on a GearVendors than $2500+ on a 200-4R...

Dave Husek built me a 200-4R Pro Plus Trans and a custom Lock-up Torque Converter for one of my Olds 461 BB that I just use at the track. The trans and torque converter came to a total of $4200. I had dave customize my shift points 1-2 5600 RPM 2-3 5200 RPM at WOT. Yes it will handle a BB Olds with no problem. What Dave used for parts for my trans are the same parts he uses when he builds a trans for the mid to low 9 seconds Buick GN's. What he recomened to you is the same build that i have and many of my freinds have. Not every one has $4000 to throw at a trans but thats what its going to cost you if you want a trans to handle high HP and Torque. And yes you can buy a trans for less money what are you really getting and how long is it going to last. I know Dave very well and he stands behind his work and great person with a lot of knowledge, he's been building 200-4R for Buick GN owners since 1990. I do have a break down of parts that was used in my trans I just need to find it and will post it.

This has been my thought process. Thanks for the info on your set up.

Is this a stock 455?

If yes, what year?

If no, what is done to it?

Your power output will determine what trans, the performance level you need and how much it will cost.
