BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

Damn dude... I would have thought a small strip of 16 gauge would have been the preferred method to address that wide of a gap. I know it works, and being talented/disciplined (is key as you demonstrated/described) - but that seems like a lot of time and material wasted.

I've only ever bridged tacks that wide on exhaust. But, I am a ham-fisted ape.

Understanding that this is a rare instance, and it may never come up again, you may want to look into a TIG as resources allow. The precision afforded will compliment your skills remarkably.

Actually, to address your comment about time and material wasted, if you think about it, welding in a thin strip really puts you no further ahead. With a strip of metal you still have all the edges to weld. So the length isn’t just the length, it’s the length x2. Plus the height. X2. And then there’s the probability of blowing holes in such a thin strip of metal using the caveman MiG like I am.
So you’re really putting in the exact same amount of time and material into welding in a strip vs just filling the gap. Trust me, I had already considered that option before I started.

I’m definitely not a fan of doing it this way as I mentioned, but it seemed to be the best solution to the problem.

I agree a TiG would definitely be the way to go, but as you mentioned resources, they aren’t there for one yet. The ease of grinding TiG welds alone would be worth it. No, I’ve got another special big ticket item that I’ve been saving for that’s due to arrive hopefully any day now that’s going to take precedence first.
Stay tuned for that.

D uses a hammer and welder like Gaugin used a paintbrush. That's f**kin' art, dude.

I just use a hammer to f**k sh*t up. Sometimes I do magic tricks where I can f**k sh*t up without a hammer.

Haha, thanks Mike.
I don’t put myself on par with any kind of artist, but I can see how it might be perceived as such. I just get in the groove, do my car thing, post the results and it usually seems to work out pretty good.
Thanks for the props.

What? We don't like endlessly grinding MIG welds?

Well, exciting news today.
The time I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for since November has finally arrived. Just got word this morning that the newest addition to The Skunkworks shop has arrived at our satellite shop in Regina.

The dealer transfer is already being setup and it should arrive here sometime early next week. I’ll probably arrange for delivery with a power lift gate truck to get it here for maybe Friday late afternoon.

Going to be a little demolition and reconfiguring of the area of the shop that it’s going into, and that might start as early as this weekend. It’s going to interrupt the progress on The Juggernaut for a bit, so I’d like the transition to go as smoothly as possible.

Not gonna let the cat outta the bag as to what it is just yet (some of you might have pretty good guesses) but suffice to say it’ll more than be worth the wait. 😈

So excited!
