BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

Hahaha
A live feed wouldn’t be near as interesting as you’d think it would be. Just me climbing in and out of the car, waving the paint gun around. If I did though, it would be to the soundtrack of The Rolling Stones “Paint it Black”.
😅
A POV reel with a GoPro mounted to the spray gun might be kind of interesting though.
with a replaceable lens cover/filter for after you capture the 'whoops' blooper clip.

How do you manage to spray from the inside outwards without recoloring your cabinets and garage walls? More masking paper?

I’m curious of the possible vulgarity of the sound bite. Or does he really complete this work as ‘according to Hoyle’?

I’m curious of how many ‘what the ____’s occur in this process 😉

Paint fog of doom.

I was spraying undercoat on a bronco in the spray booth. When I came out from under the truck I noticed I had painted both sides of the spray booth. Of course I had just painted the booth walls a few months prior, and the undercoating did not want to come off. My boss wasn’t too happy about that.

Well the deed is done.
Don’t get too excited, I’m not all that happy with it. In fact, I decided before I was even done cleaning the gun that I’m going to redo it.

The seatbelt boxes and the sides turned out fine…

…it’s the firewall itself that I’m not satisfied with.

The package tray portion of it is ok, not great, but ok.

The front face of the firewall is where I’m the most unhappy with. Lots of little pinholes that developed when the epoxy didn’t flow out well enough…

…and a couple of runs that I got when I tried to compensate for it with slower and heavier coats:

Now I know I should temper my expectations, afterall this isn’t paint, it isn’t even paint quality, and honestly was never intended to be. It is epoxy primer afterall.

But still.

The perfectionist in me knows I can do better, and quite frankly, doesn’t want to spend the next umpteen weeks/months/years looking at it in this state. It’ll grate on my nerves every time I look at it.

It actually doesn’t look too bad in the pictures, which for once is odd, it’s usually the other way around.

But I’ve already made up my mind. I’ll give it a couple days to cure then block sand it out in 180, maybe even step up to 220, and shoot it again. I’m not even going to unmask it yet. I don’t think it’ll take all that long to tune it up, I should be able to shoot it again by the weekend.

A bit anticlimactic guys, and I apologize, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I post my successes, but I also think it’s just as important to post when I come up short too.

The quality and work and self scrutiny are on unholy levels. Can't wait to see how it looks when you are finally happy with it.

I'm just over here happy I'll be able to cover my floor patches with carpet and boom mat.

Bummer it didn’t turn out the way you’re hoping, but do not apologize. One dirty little secret in auto restoration (that many of us here probably know) is parts of a project are redone often, especially paint. Sometimes more than twice. Like you said, it’s relatively quick and easy to sand, clean and respray.

I’m doubling down that there should have been a live feed. The expletives would have been epic!
