BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

Aaaaand done.

Started by aligning the seat bracket edge to the original where I had cut it, then tacked the sides to keep it square.

Bolted down the Corbeau seat base to position the front at the right height…

…and burned in a couple nice hot rosettes on the inner rocker.

No need to actually bolt the seat base to this stud, the bracket naturally had some upwards spring to it, so once the other points were tightened up, it pushed the bracket exactly to where it wanted to be.

Obviously want this to be nice and strong, don’t want my passenger’s to get an unexpected “ejecto-seato cuz” because of something as stupid as a broken seat bracket weld.

If I want you out that badly, I’ll just open the door and boot you out myself. I can be that way sometimes. 😂

With the height now locked into place, I could remove the seat base and start working my way around the inside perimeter.

Won’t bore y’all further with the details, just tack, tweak, tack and grind until done.
The finished product:

I had this one rosette weld I couldn’t really get to due to its location deep in the recess, so I just left it. Looks kinda out of place with everything else cleaned up, but oh well. I’ll live with it, it ain’t ever going to be seen anyways.

And the icing on the cake, just to prove this entire endeavour has been worth it, I dropped the seat base back into place and snugged it down. Fits perfectly, no binding or fighting to get it over the studs.

I have a lot more work to do to these floor pans this year yet, but once they’re all done I’ll shoot it all in some epoxy, probably black I’m thinking. Honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I sprayed all this horrible spatter trunk paint last time. Epoxy will be the best product for this application, durable, corrosion resistant, and paintable if so desired.

Anyways, that’s it for now, hope y’all enjoyed the fabrication progress.

Makes me SO glad I have a rust-free starting point. I'd have to farm all this stuff out, and likely either cost me $4K to get all the welding work done, or it just wouldn't get done.

I’ve gotten fairly lucky with both cars now, no real serious rust issues in the floor pans in either one. This project is/was out of necessity, as Newton’s Law states, “no two things can occupy the same space at the same time”.

It’s all about clearance, Clarence.

Absolutely beautiful metal work as always D! Very impressive!!!!!

Thank you Scott!

Great work D. Looks like you need one of these to get down in to those tight areas.

you find all kind of uses for those once you have one,it's a good tool.outfit with diffrent grits etc.

Usually you find the work, but sometimes the work finds you. Found this suspicious looking spot hiding underneath the seam sealer adjacent to the passenger side pinch weld, classic pinhole perforation as a result of corrosion underneath.

Faaack.

So out came the cutoff wheel and time to make a hole. Not surprised one bit with what I found underneath, this is a direct result of poor GM design and execution. Have a forward facing flange underneath the car, and don’t seal it up properly. Crud and debris gets in the opening and festers between two layers of sheetmetal.

So, I did what I do, clean it all up as best as possible and brush in some rust converter as far as I could reach.

When that was dry, I masked it off and sprayed some high zinc weld-thru primer.

Made a patch, burned it in, and metal finished it out. Boom, done. Easy little 2 hour job. What rust hole??

Mike and I are now full steam ahead on the driver’s side and things are going pretty well. Writing this as I’m waiting for him to finish up grinding his patch on the inner rocker.

Stoked to be getting rocking on the driver’s side now.
👍🏻

In comparison I feel like a hack ! AMAZING work D. Feels like we are watching hand built hot rods or the like.
Thanks very much man! I appreciate the kind words and compliment. This car is my true pride and joy so I try to do my best work on this one.
