The search for a comfortable tow pig...

I don't mean to look dumb as dirt, but what does the "496" mean? You mentioned it in the first post. Also, would you consider a 2wd 1500 Suburban?

A 496 is an 8.1L Chevy Big Block that was an option on 2500 Suburbans.

1500 Suburbans have multilink rear suspensions and tow TERRIBLY compared to a leaf sprung 2500. If a guy has a 1500 suburban and says it tows "great", he has never towed with a 2500. Night meet day.

Hate to admit it but I would not rule out a 2001 - 2003 - 7.3 Excursion. Million mile motors if you can find one that is not hacked, jacked, or messed with. I cannot believe what we have put our work trucks thru over the last couple years. Tuggin, towing, offroading with 9000 lbs of bucket ladder attached. Biatches don't want to start when it's really cold and they leak oil but they will idle for days, and have torque like a ****.

Ahhh. Thank you for the education. I have only towed an enclosed motorcycle trailer with the suburban. I use my duramax dually for the car trailers.

Watch out if you do have to finance. Maybe not an issue with your bank but dealer financing a-holes are doing more of the heavy penalty for early payoff loans. Maybe not in all cases, but I thought they were gone until my cousin just got hammered refinancing his Dud- ge Ram.

Not a worry, I'm just paying straight cash. Thats how I've handled all my vehicles for years, sole exception was doing 0%/72 months on the '14 mustang when it was new. Otherwise no loans, no interest payments.

I *MAY* have found a truck by dumb luck that was listed for sale last night.

03 2500 burb, 4x4, autoride, lt pkg, quad buckets, leather, bose, towing pkg, 130k miles. Pretty clean, only one minor ding, white paint so it won't fade and hides imperfections... sounds pretty decent. Supposedly well maintained and at least has the same Michelin ltx ms2 tires on it I run on my truck so it doesn't look like maintenance was cheaper out on.

One question I DO have is it is ironically a TX truck. On the Texas dmv websites there looks to be a self service 5 day transit tag online you can print... BUT it doesn't say if other states will honor it? Anyone have experience with that? Saves me tons of time and hassle if I don't need to spend a day trying to get a dmv to issue a 30 day tag, I could just fly in and drive home.

Not seeing much info online, but, I'd be headed through Louisiana, 30 seconds of Mississippi, Alabama, then Georgia...

This is supposed to be stock trim dyno pulls for an 8.1L.

Big, heavy, thirsty motors, but, they also do this:

Mine has 2nd row captains chairs. Far superior to the bench, unless you have 5 kids.

Every car I've sold in Texas people just fly in and drive it home. If you have a bill of sale, proof of insurance and a signed away Texas title, no cop will question it.

Texas doesn't like 30 day plates probably because that is how Texans used to launder cars into Texas. Texas pays sales tax on the new title issue. Other states pay sales tax on the registration (or registration is based on car value). You used to be able to buy a car in another state (that has registration based taxes), get a 30 day plate, drive it to Texas and Swap registration, and never pay sales tax (because you owned it in another state and were just re-licencing in Texas. I did this for 8 cars before someone finally asked "did you pay sales tax?"

Must've been a nice loophole while it lasted.

At this point I'm waiting on a complete vin number to run a history report. It'll be worth spending the $40 in the long run. Too bad too, tomorrow would've been a good day to head out if all came back clear, wife's work shuttered due to rain/flooding potential from the storm heading into the area.
