My “rare car” story is I owned a ‘00 VW GTI VR6. That year, they had a special color, “Tropic Orange.” I saw the color at a car show, and fell in love with it. I also drove a GTI VR6 subsequently when I was working for a magazine, and that sealed the deal. It was a blast and a half to drive.

At the time, my cousin was a VW dealer in Northern California, so I had him special-order me one. It took a couple of months, but I finally got it. I was in love with that car for a while, until things started going all to $#!+. Had nothing but trouble with that car. I enjoyed it when it ran, but it seemed it was in the shop about as often as it was on the road.

Anyway. That’s it. 🙂

Maybe you should of hid it away in a garage for 30 years then you wouldn't of had to deal with all that shop time. Bet you could of made thousands at an auction when you released that as a barn find. 😉

I've owned a couple of "rare cars" but it doesn't mean they are worth $$$. It's the balance between supply and demand. My 1970 GS was one of those sought after cars and I made out like a bandit on it. My 1984 Mustang GT turbo convertible, just as rare (even one of one on color) has no demand - no $$$.

pagrunt, at least in today's market, the Mk4 GTIs are the least sought-after, except for the 337 and anniversary editions, and the R32. Who knows what they'd be worth over time, but right now, they're kind of the forgotten generation.

Well what I like about your Camaros is as follows:
-They were driven.
-They were shared between two drivers.
-They had different enough options i.e. they provided unique driving experiences from each other.

I was born in 1990 so I suppose I'm too far removed to appreciate these cars for "what they were."
But, even though I know pickings were far slimmer in the '80s, I'm always going to liken this to me buying two undriven Grand Prix GTPs with sequential VINs for over 100,000 dollars.
And as always, no offense. Different folks, different strokes.

I always submit that rare does not equate to desirable. Case in point (although that might be changing as time goes on):
I present you the Levi Pacer X. You know you want it.

I had a woodshop teacher in high school who was a Pacer fanatic. He owned like 4 of them. I think he smoked a little too much grass back in the day, but never have I seen someone so in love with such a weird car.
