Never remove the thermostat! That is a big no-no! Some people think that the motor will run cooler,,but that's not true. It will actually run hotter because with no thermostat to open and close. the water will never get a chance to cool down in the radiator because it is constantly flowing.

That's a common error, the system is a closed loop so the longer you keep the coolant in the rad to cool the longer your keeping the coolant in the engine to heat up more....by your theory a 195 thermostat should keep the engine cooler since that would hold back the coolant in the rad for a longer period of time...

the thermostat's purpose is to keep the engine at it's proper operating temperature....not to cool it down

Ok pontiacgp....you run your car without a thermostat and i'll keep mine in and we'll see who's engine runs cooler!
been there done that!! it doesn't make the engine run cooler by omitting it!

I've ran mine with and without a thermostat. It won't for sure make it run hotter or colder. It depends on more variables. Say you have a large aluminum multiple core radiator or double pass radiator and a motor that isn't making huge power it can run cooler, even at full flow. On the other hand if you don't have a cooling system up to the task, then it will most likely run hotter. You also have to consider that some people also run restrictors when the don't run a thermostat. Keep in mind the thermostat only controls minimum operating temperature, the rest of the cooling system controls the maximum.

the rest of the cooling system controls the maximum.

that's how i run my cooling system, to control the maximum. getting it warm and hot isnt hard, but the stock equipment even when new didnt do a very good job of keeping the minimum down. what i have now keeps it more consistent.

im currently using a 160 but i have the fan set to about 200 simply because the computer needs the engine running at what they put into the computer as normal operating temps. i HAVE set the fan to 180 but i believe especially during the winter and cooler months that it should be set higher.

i'm about to step up to a 180 so the engine its warmer before the thermostat opens and takes less time to fully warm. the 160 just seems too low for winter use.

You seem to have a problem with the english language. Where did I say it anything about running without a thermostat is preferable? You seem to think a thermostat's purpose is to cool an engine down. Like I said it is to warm the engine up to proper running temps. Idiots like you want to run your mouth off instead of thinking. You want to your engine cool then be my guest but be forewarned...

"Some experts estimate that the wear on the rings of an internal combustion engine is as high as 0.001" per 1000 miles of operation when the oil temperature is below 170 degrees F. If the maximum allowable wear is 0.006", how long can you run your engine when the oil temperature is below 170 degrees before you wear it out?"

and on top of destroying your engine you'll have poor performance and poor fuel economy...
