Timing

36 degrees total advance without vacuum hooked up. that would be at about 3k rpms.

That's another question I have, why do people say not to hook up vac. advance to set timing.

It makes no difference, it's not even engaging at low rpms when you set your timing.

i had someone on here explain it to me very well. one moment i will find the thread

Here it is. Dedub has a very good post.

Thanks adumb for the info, I guess I had it backwards, it's engaged at low rpms and lets off at higher ones, that makes more sense

i thnk it is more for partial throttle driving,
when you are in 'light' cruising driving conditions, the engine can handle more advance, so based on the vacuum of the engine, the dist will advance the timing when you are cruising for better gas milage.

On my 1977 Buick Skylark I had a 10 degree vacuum advance hooked up on ported vacuum and set total advance at 38 degrees @ 3000 rpms(I never disconnected when setting). I forgot the part number on the vacuum advance from GM but that setup worked well. I also used the lightest mechanical advance kit from Moroso.

Hmm..i think im a little lost here, how do i time the engine to 36 degrees? I was referring to the timing tab and what the mark on the harmonic balancer should match up to (with the vac adv. Disconnected)
