Tire age question

here is what happens to old tires. tire looked almost new before we left. no cracks great tread nothing to say this was coming... they were on the car when we bought it. thought they were changed when the fronts were (fronts were only a couple years old) and didn't realize they were about 10 years old at the time. happened on the nj parkway doing about 70mph.

Best possible outcome, assuming all were safe. Doesn't look like the belt detached and started banging away on the sheetmetal?

They make great rollers if you have projects.

I had a set of 5 year old Falkens that had less than 1000 miles on them, they seperated after a few months so badly you'd have thought there were bent wheels on the car.

General opinion around the web is that bias plies will survive the aging process, radials will not.

I hadn’t really given much thought to the age of the tires until I bought the new ones for the front. Time sure does fly.
