Check the skidplate that holds the gas tank, they're usually rusted from the inside out. If it's rusted bad enough the tank just falls out.

That is a common issue and I checked that, the Jeep is very clean. All the gas struts for the the tail gate and hood are fairly new and this Jeep was well taken care of. He has one of these sitting in his hobby shop, he has the Dodge Ram with the viper engine that came out and it;s in showroom condition...I didn't ask him the year but they only came out in 2004 to 2006 and he does have some miles on it so he does drive it.

Those 4Runners are some tough little trucks. Mileage wouldn't scare me and the 3.4 V6 isn't bad as long as the timing belt and water pump have been done. As previously said, rust is about the only thing that'll kill them.

My '11 LTD has somewhere around 210k miles on it, bought it new. The thing is a tank. I'm bumping up on having to do some front suspension stuff (CA's/bushings/ball joints) just bc its getting worn. But other than that, 10K oil changes (factory spec w/ full synth), prevent. stuff like belts/plugs/filters/etc. The only things I've had to do are swap out the cruise control lever (bc I broke it) and the fuel sender started reading off just recently. The fuel sender is part of the pump/filter assembly in the tank and its $$$ so I can live with a false gauge reading. Drove 6K+ miles on a 2-wk road trip in May '17 and not a single hiccup.

The 5th gen have the 4.0L V6 which has an actual timing chain. I've heard bad things about the previous timing-belt motors, too.

I like the 4Runner but like I said I never got a reply to my reposnse to their ads so I bought a Jeep that has what I was looking for.

I guess Jeep has done some upgrades to the front suspension. When they came out with the independent front suspension in 2005 they had lots of issues with the front suspension being weak and you'd have changed control arms and ball joint well before 210,000 miles. My current 2003 Grand Cherokee Specia Edition (Laredo with a few extra features) has the 4.0 and it has around 170k on it and it works great, I changed the transfer case and front driveshaft about 25k ago. The spiders gears were pitted when I checked out the differentials a few summers ago but they seem to be holding out. It has an exhaust leak, one axle seal in the back is leaking, the intermittent wipers are not working, rocker panels don't exist any longer but the worst of it all is the back brakes need to be replaced so it's time to dump it. This Special Edition has the weak 35 Dana in it and I figured on dumping it last summer but I never got around to it and have put more miles on it this winter than I wanted to. I drive my grandkids around quite a bit so I don't want to be in a vehicle I can't trust. Currently I have 4 trouble codes and I ain't puting any money into it.

Er. Guess I didn’t read it all 😳 My ‘11 4Runner Limited. 🙂. Is a tank.

Edit: and I forgot I did the front wheel bearings just before that road trip. But yeah. Tank.

I don't read everything sometimes either, I'm old so that goes with the territory..... those 4Runners must be great cause even the people that have them for sale don't seem to want to part with them...😕

A 4.7 Jeep?!?!?!!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

They're only half bad, my brothers 4.7 is still running strong at 200k mls. He even swapped the engine into another GC when the old body rusted beyond repair last month.
