I like the 4Runner but like I said I never got a reply to my reposnse to their ads so I bought a Jeep that has what I was looking for.

Oops, I missed the part where you said you got a Jeep. I like Grand Cherokees, and I'm very familiar with the rust spot you mentioned, I fixed a lot of them when I was working in the auto body field. The 4.7 isn't a bad engine from what I know, a buddy of mine has a 1999 Durango with one and he's been waiting for it to die for years. It's still running like clockwork, his wife drives it. Post up some pictures when you get it!

with the 4.7 there is an issue if the oil changes are not done, carbon can build up and when you stop the engine if a lifter is sitting at the top and carbon has been built up the lifter could jamb and the rocker will be pushed out of place.

This!
My 3.7 Dakota did this last year, Jan.2 at 10 below zero.
I spent the day outside, removing half the engine to get the damn rocker cover off to have the rocker fall on my foot once the cover cleared the rail.
Off to the dealer for a new spring loaded plunger doohicky and levered the rocker back under the cam.
Plunger was all crudded up and did not keep pressure on the rocker and at 10 below, it shat right out the side.
WIth confidence in the previous maint, you should be fine..

The pre HO ones like to coke oil in the drain passage from the head back to the oil pan. Something about the EGR getting the passage and oil super hot. After awhile of this the passage is basically blocked up and the oil can't drain back to the pan. The heads end up flooded with oil leaving nothing in the pan to pump around. No oil pressure leads to catastrophic engine failure. The heads are prone to warpage, also drop valve seats at random. When compared to the engines it replaced it's a winner on paper. More power than both the 5.2/5.9 and better mileage too. Some could be due to the transmission efficiency as well. They do have a shady reputation but I don't think to they are much different from the engines before. Just alot harder to work on.
