A 4.7 Jeep?!?!?!!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I have seen opposing reviews of the 4.7 and it appears if the maintenance on the engine was done regularly the 4.7 will last. How many 4.7 Jeeps have you owned?

The key is finding a H.O. version, they came with hardened valve seats etc. And maintenance of course.

I actually like the 4.7 -- as long as they keep running. Problem is that when they break they aren't cost effective to repair.

Zero because of the bad rep they have.

The heads are junk.

The 2 guys at work both had 4.7's and both their heads went (rockers)

I'm not wishing bad luck with it, just keep an eye on it.

The Cherokee's I have owned were always 4.0 straight sixes

I know you were asking Turna but I haven't owned any. I've worked on dozens, if not hundreds. Most are fine. But I haven't had a single (Jeep) customer pay to replace a bad engine. They just scrap the car and buy something else. I did a couple Dakotas though that the old guys just couldn't let go.

The jeep grand cherokee laredo is a great truck very solid feeling very comfortable. Great in the snow.

The 2 I owned were 2000 both were sold with close to 400k on them

I've owned a number of 4.0 XJ's over the years, even raced one and the last things surviving after a nuclear war will be cockroaches and the old 4.0 straight six. Incredible engine mated to an outstanding auto trans. Friend of mine cracked the transmission case on a rock in the middle of nowhere in Romania and drove that thing 1.000mls home pouring whatever oilish fluid he could find in it. At the end the AW4 slipped, lost a gear or two, but dragged the Jeep home.

The last shop I worked at was a Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler specialist. Same can be said about the Cummins.

with the 4.7 there is an issue if the oil changes are not done, carbon can build up and when you stop the engine if a lifter is sitting at the top and carbon has been built up the lifter could jamb and the rocker will be pushed out of place.
