I can only offer very basic info: I did a 700r4 swap and controlled clutch lock up with a switch. Also important that the carb to trans cable be adjusted correctly.( It's been 20 years, I forgot all the good stuff)

nothing been done under hood lately still has ecm although some items are missing also looking into aftermarket controller any suggestions

1st thing to check is the TV cable. If it isn't correct it will not shift right and damage can occur very rapidly. As for an aftermarket controller for a 700R4 there is none, it is a completely mechanical transmission no electronic control.
The next possible issue is a sticky servo or governor.

It's a simple trans...no computer connections. The TV cable adjustment controls shifts and an electrical connector on the trans controls the clutch lockup.

sounds like it may be rebuild time.... went through same issue on mine on a couple different cars. probably sheared the splines on the shell, it's a common problem on the 700r4's, or the clutches may have just finally given up... given the age/mileage of our cars, this is a truth we have to face.last one that went out on me was due to it's mostly sitting for 4 years...
this is where they usually shear

let us know what you find...

The TV cable controls the shifts

It's not electric, it's mechanical. You have to manually adjust the cable to get it right. I got my '87 MCSS for peanuts because the 200-4R was believed to be toast, but the tv cable had been adjusted completely out of wack and it was low on trans fluid.
