Transmission Cooler

You don't need a fan to run with the cooler...as long as you DO have a fan from the factory......You don't need all that extra jazz, lights and whistles...GO to napa or autozone and buy the biggest they have for like $40.00 or so, put it in and be done with it. 😀

I have dual electric fans for the radiator. Can I run 2 smaller cooler together to get the effectiveness of a larger one?

Yes you can, but you probably don't need to.
Unless you are doing a lot of trailer hauling or anything else that is working the transmission hard one cooler should be fine.

Remember also that every join in the system is a potential leak source, and an extra cooler is a little more weight.

There was a reason the transmission cooler was built into the radiator, the temp for the transmission fluid has to be hot enough to do it's job. If you have a remote cooler for the rad that may not allow the temp to get up to running temp and if it does it will take longer than recommended. The after market transmission coolers are meant to run in conjunction with the transmission cooler incorporated into the rad.

what is the regular operating temp for a 400 trans, and where whould be the best place to install a temp gauge?

for ATF the suggested operating temp is 175 - 225...I would install a gauge in the return line at the transmission so you get an accurate reading

This is a question I've put up on this and several other forums, keeping the temp to 165f is the most popular suggestion, backed up with transmission life vs oil temperature charts. I have also been told that the transmission will work ok if the oil is cold. By the nature of how an automatic works it heats up quite quickly.

I have noticed on various cars they upshift a bit late when the transmission is stone cold.

X2 on running the oil through the heat exchanger in the coolant radiator (I know you don't have one), however your transmission is unlikely to come to harm for not doing so.

For simplicity I would install the temperature sender in the transmission oil pan, making sure it will be immersed in fluid but not obstructing flow in any way.

whats the purpose of a trans cooler besides the obvious? any install instructions? and should i get one for my cutlass with a th350. which is a weekend driver, no racing?

on any car i would add an additional one, hot fluid will kill the transmission. its pretty easy to install you can google it and see, normally it goes inline of the transmission lines and the radiator.
like the hot line from the transmission to the radiator then to the external cooler then back to the transmission
