So the big puffs of smoke that came out of the carb were definately bad. If I did ruin the power valve, would it keep the car from starting? Or would there just be a bog when I press on the gas?

if the power valve is blown it won't really affect starting. and one backfire won't always kill it. i backfired mine a couple of time without damage. and that was full backfires with flames out the carb. puffs of smoke are not a problem to the carb.
