What condition was the carbon "button" that sticks through the cap? That button was toast!.. half missing and no longer round.. it ws pretty corroded and rough. Do you guys think I might as well just change the coil since i did the rest?

I would, coil cap and rotor. 8)

Every bad coil I've ever seen was underperforming or just dead. I would definitly change everything but why not ohm test the coil and see what kind of numbers you get. You know what a GM coil test is right? Hold the coil terminal or boot about 1 inch away from a ground and see if the spark jumps that. I've done it and I have gotten the spark to jump about 6 inches. It's like a tiny thunderbolt.

looking at the rotor the contact point for the button is off center....I wonder if the button was not installed properly and it put side pressure on the button as the rotor spun..

It happeed again!

OK so I checked my rotor again and its all messed up again! The carbon on the cap was gone and half the metal tab on rotor is fried to sh*t! Changed it but car is running like crap. What could be causing this? I just switched it out a few months ago. I know it should last longer.. frustrated I cant figure out why this keeps happening.

remember to grease the bottom of the coil upon installation as well (there's a special grease for it)

Make sure the ground strap on the coil isnt missing. Dont ask me why, but they can be forgotten when coils get changed, even by so called mechanics that charge 65bucks an hour!

what button are you running in the cap?....also if your plug wires have too much resistance, shorting out or your plug gap is too wide your you'll put too much load on the rotor and cap

What type of grease is it? Do you know the name of it? I wasn't aware of that.

I use the button that came with the distrubitor cap from Autozone. Maybe it is the wires.. Im a little suspect about them. I will be changing them this weekend and putting in new plugs.. Autozone the plugs are gapped at .80 does that sound right to you?
