Unknown SBC Timing Cover

with the early vettes and mechanical fuel injection they still used a short standard rotation water pump. Literally no room for something like this coming out of the timing cover. But still there are no mounting holes. I will be looking more into this for a marine application.

Well he brought it in today. He cleaned it up and painted it. I looked at it and you can see the top seal looks like a factory stamping. There are no numbers on it except a "38" in between the 2 seals. Also the timing cover seal has a GM seal in it # 3980267. Which I searched and it was for a early 67-70.

Its definitely interesting none the less. He cleaning the pan now and it looks to be all factory, and it has the oil baffles, and trap door in it like an aftermarket race pan. I will get pictures of that later.

Everything about that cover screams GM factory stamping but I can't think of a single application. You think it's safe to assume it might have been an over-the-counter performance part like the old Z28 cross-ram was?

Ya I can't think of anything either. Maybe for like an industrial engine/generator of sorts. It was used to drive something? I was even thinking marine application. A Chris Craft 327 has a tin timing cover like this. But it had 3 rivets around the center hole.

I'm completely stumped.
Ya same here. Really has us scratching our heads at work. From what Ive seen online during my lunch breaks, I'm betting its marine.

Heres the inside of that pan. The spot welds look all factory, but Ive never seen baffles and a trap door from the factory. I think someone was good with a spot welder and modified a corvette pan.
