Re: Another Daily Driver

Very cool potential factor. I'm sure you remember the Car Craft project with the Cad 500 in it. I think they used a Ford 8" from a Pinto in that. I don't think you'll need anything much stronger than that since the skinny rear tires will likely spin loose before an axle or gear breaks.

Re: Another Daily Driver

A buddy of mine thinks I'm crazy, but I've always thought the Chevette had cool potential as a small RWD. My Blazer gets 15 MPG in the city and 15 MPG on the highway with 31s, about the same as the Cutlass. I find that getting such bad MPG with my DD is good justification to drive the Cutlass at any time...like I need any. 🙂

Re: Another Daily Driver

Cool! My uncle had about 6 or 7 of them over the course of about 10 years. When I was about 8, I remember he had it parked in front of our house. He left something reflective in the hatchback that apparently reflected the Sun back on the headliner and caught the car on fire.

Re: Another Daily Driver

Ok finally got a minute to work on this thing today. I didn't want to have to redo anything with where the previous owner had the engine sitting so I just made it fit with where it was. The problem with that was the block was rubbing the steering column. Some grinding on the block around the filter area and a few test fits and that was good. With better planning you shouldn't need to do that, I just didn't want to start over again. Then I spaced up one side of the motor mounts that were supposed to be done already. Then welded them in. Please no laughing, I am no welder, plus this is the first real thing I welded with this new welder.

Next up is the exhaust. The plan is some homemade headers, hopefully.

Re: Another Daily Driver

Got another update. It doesn't seem like much but between not having a garage and all the other stuff i've had to work on lately, anything is an accomplishment. Some friends helped out coming up with some old headers so I finally got the headers welded up. That was a b*tch! On a lighter note I put the fuel pump on after some clearancing with a hammer and torch. Then mocked up the water pump and alternator. Had to make a bracket for the alternator since the factory one woulda pushed it through the hood. Also had to drop the crossmember and lower the transmission so I could put on transmission lines. Then got the speedo and shifter hooked up, hoping those will work right. Oh yaeh I also had to cut up the heater box for clearance for the distributor. I will glass that back in soon. Now for pics.
