Did you guys hear about the scam Volkswagen pulled on the diesel Volkswagen and Audi vehicles since 2008. The software shut off the emission controls when driving the car and turns them back on when doing an emissions test. There are close to 1/2 million cars that are affected.

I think that since all those cars have failed the emission tests they should be taken off the road until fixed.

They don't actually fail though. Since it is software that changes not the hardware the system does and can pass emissions fine when proper parameters sent to ECU.

I understand your point but since the emissions is turned off when driving normally they all fail. The point of emissions test is that the car is within the acceptable perimeters at all times when driving. The check engine light should be on constantly except when getting the emissions test. If I remove any emissions control device my car can be taken off the road and I get a hefty fine. They do it with software which can't be seen but it is no different.

Why does big oil get a pass on emissions tests and people like you think it's ok for the blame of global warming to fall on the back of the working man and his commuter station wagon. Until companies that build dangerous pipelines, spew smoke, and pollute the water have to clean up their act I don't give a damn about an emissions test. Those diesel engines get nearly 40 mpg; who cares if they blow a little smoke?

global warming/climate change is due to the sun, we have no control over it. We were not here the last time the ice that covered most of the earth melted....but there is no reason to go there, this is about the games that Volkswagen is playing

The owners should not be penalized for a failure/mistake on a OEM vendor by having their car taken off road for something they did not do and have paid hard earned money to drive. It is just a shame that most modern day emission tests have little to do with actual pollution control and more about just money and bureaucratic control.

I agree the owners should not be penalized, the owners should be given a comparable car while their car is in to get fixed. I also agree that emissions is just another ploy to give the gov another tax revenue and has little to do with the environment. That being said there are rules and the people who are responsible at Volkswagen ought to be the ones held accountable. As it is now all the fines that will be assessed will be against the company so the shareholders will be the ones who pay the fines.

What if a higher court rules that the law technically didn't say that vehicles had to maintain the same standard as during the emissions test while operating? Touchdown.

I would think of it was an unknown problem then they might be able to wiggle out of it but since they programmed it then they're stuck.with it...
