Volkswagen/Audi Emission Scam

Seems West Virgina University students did a tailpipe test and discovered the problem initially. Rumors of VW threatening to sue the University after tuition grants were refused seem to be swirling

Odds are this will trickle down to other manufacturers doing the same thing. Techs and engineers are disposable to the manufacturers so often when you leave auto company A you move on to company B and so forth ( taking the technology with them )

on today's cars I don't think the performance suffers on gasoline engines too much from emission controls. Some people get aftermarket chips to improve performance but all those chips do is to fool the computer to run the engine in cold mode all the time...

"
The PCV system circulates the escaped gases from the crankcase back to the combustion chamber. The engine cylinder can not be sealed completely. A portion of the gases will leak through the small gap between the rings and the cylinder wall and enter into the crankcase. The PCV system recycles these gases back into the cylinder and burns them again. The PCV valve is the main component that controls the amount of the recycled gases. This improves the mileage per gallon of gasoline, and prevents the formation of the harmful gases and sludge in the engine.

The EGR system prevents the formation of the harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx). NOx can be produced severely in the combustion chamber at high temperature (over 2500 F). Lowering the combustion temperature reduces the chance of the NOx formation. The EGR system circulates a certain amount of the exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber and dilutes the fuel mixture. Since there is not much fuel to burn at this time, the combustion temperature is lowered and the NOx gas can not form. The EGR valve controls the flow of the recirculated exhaust gases based on the combustion temperature and the engine operating conditions. A failed EGR valve may affect the engine performance.

The catalytic converter changes the harmful carbon monoxide (CO) into non-harmful carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrocarbons (CH) into water and carbon dioxide. It is located in the exhaust system. It contains very expensive catalyst materials which can be poisoned by the leaded gasoline. Therefore, unleaded gasoline is required for all converter-equipped cars.

The evaporative emission system controls the gasoline vapor. A canister is filled with activated carbon that absorbs the gasoline vapor from the fuel system. The vapor can be purged from the canister and then burned in the engine. The canister is usually maintenance-free for lifetime."

I'm in northwest Indiana with no emissions test and ready to buy your vw station wagon if you're mad - won't fix a damn thing...

that's strange, do you know why are cars only in Lake and Porter counties subject to emissions test and the rest of the state isn't?

.... They seem to be only using the Volkswagen brand name to try to keep the Audi brand from being affected.

here in France (and in Europe), medias don't only speak about VW.... Audi, SEAT, SKODA and even Porsche (i think with the Porsche Cayenne diesel) are concerned...
France and other european country asked to make investigations on other car brands and it would be amazing than no other brand will be concerned (maybe, Peugeot, renault, mercedes BMW or others)... here , half of the french fleet are diesel cars (only 1% in the USA)...this story causes a stir here too...

Several counties do have emissions test now, but Lake & Porter are in close proximity to Chicago. Many cars that have failed inspection in those counties or St Joseph (south bend) seem to land here. Why? I can't say. Indianapolis and surrounding has emissions tests as well. It's a good thing this supports a thriving used car market here, since most people don't make enough income to buy a new car and manufacturing is down...

That is easy to answer. Those counties are stuck in the tentacles of the BS craziness that is Chicago. The cesspool of corruption and bad ideas.

it'd be nice if you could keep us updated on what goes on in France

I just read an article that here in Ontario they will not register the diesel Volks or Audi next time the plate comes up for renewal if the owner cannot prove the car has been repaired
