Sorry to hear all the tales of woe here.
My inlaws are great!! I realize I'm in the minority. But I'm glad for it. They live less than five minutes away. They were trilled to death when I asked to marry their daughter. They were even more thrilled when we announced we finally found a house in the same township as them, after a year of searching all of the surrounding communities. Yet, they know to allow us our space. When the Two Terrors were little, they never hesitated to step up and help watch them such as when I had something to take care of and my wife has worked second shift since our oldest was born.
FIL is a life-long mechanic and while he can't get around so good anymore, he never fails to offer good advice if I get stuck on whatever it is I'm wrenching on. He also owns a perfectly patina'd 54 Ford farm truck that he's already promised to my boys and I. MIL has a 40th anniversary Mustang Vert that is also in line to join the fleet here.
They both see what I've given up over the last 15 years to insure that the house was taken care of, the yard looks great and the kids had the support they needed in school and to participate in all the sports they do. Inlaws rarely fail to miss any of both of my kids' sporting events nor my niece and nephew's events as well.
I NEVER get grief for spending whatever time I get out in my shop. Everyone would much rather I be out there than out at some bar or in some casino or God knows where......
