Weird engine issues

Not sure if this will help you at all but you said once you hit the linkage it leveled back down. Check the return spring near the idle screws/ throttle bracket. Look for a little bit of a wear mark/rub on it. It might be intermittently hanging up there.

I agree with GPP, I had a similar issue with my 1411 carb, the fast idle cam would stick sometimes causing idle to go @ 1K rpm then slowly creep up to 1500 ~ 1600rpm when cold. I don't believe you have a vac leak at the base since the rpm didn't increase with the carb cleaner.

Yea, the set screw is usually set in the middle of the fast idle cam. Also i was thinking about when i did mine, and i set the floats to the wrong drop and that threw off the idle too. If you go to edelbrock you can download the instructions as a pdf . I loaded mine to my phone so i could work on car with it right there. The instructions are simple to adjust.

Okay so I checked for the rub mark and its clean. Also rechecked the float levels per edelbrock instruction (still have DVD from purchase) and verified correct levels. I don't remember mentioning it but I just rebuilt carb after finding a ton of sh*t in the bowls and the idle mix screw ports were clogged. Anywhoo I double checked everything and all seems well. I have one more attempt and its not the smartest idea in my bag but its to change the return springs with a higher tension spring. As for it dying I've come to find that at the same time the ign module fried itself. Who knew right? Anyways thanks for all the tips fellas ill be sure to keep it updated

So it's been a bit but I finally had a chance to work on the car. We just had a baby girl so time has been limited. Anyways I seem to have gotten the issue fixed. I pulled off the top of the carb again and noticed the butterfly's were digging into the bore. Cleaned up the marks and tried a new return spring and also a different mount location. Boom problem solved. I love the idea of keeping my car old school with a carb but I'm tempted to go efi now. Thanks for the help guys.

Well back to the drawing boards. The car has been sitting for a while now since time is crazy limited. On startup it's seems like the car is misfiring and I am getting a $#!T ton of smoke (smells like raw fuel) but after like 4 minutes at half throttle it clears up and runs like a champ. I figured fuel was leaking into the intake over time so I tested the theory. I made a little catch in the intake and let the car sit for a week. No fuel In the catch. Checked my plugs and they look fine. Maybe condensation under the plug boots? I am fed up with this damned carb but I don't have the money for a new one and I am years away from my efi swap since I still need a harness and computer. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Timing set at 12 degrees. Edelbrock 750 carb. Engine specs in signature line.

Well it's been months but I took her out for a spin after the last repair. Bad juju! She sputters and stalls out at part throttle. I am wondering if I have the wrong size carb on there, if the 750 is just a bit too much and floods it out. I remember the reason I changed it was that my 600 was lean the whole time but I can just change the jetting right? On startup she has a slight misfire that goes away after warming up a bit and then she smokes fuel clouds like crazy. I am just waiting on parts for my tpi swap but until then I need it right! So anyways, do you all think I have too much carb on there right now? Mild sbc 355 running about 10.5 or 11:1, .500/.470 cam don't remember lsa, mild port work, headers, cast iron 1.94 heads, forged pistons and rods, scat crank, base timing at 12 degrees. Haven't had it dynoed since I blew the head gaskets and replaced the 2.02 heads but estimated around 370ish hp.

Re: Weird engine issues..help please!

Anyone with a bright idea? What size carbs do you recommend??? I was trying to get it ready for a cruise today for the 4th...
