WENT TO TRACK TONIGHT

No one makes a kit for the Olds small block yet. The pistons are used custom Venolia .040" 550 gram to work with sbc small journal rods. They are attached to Scat 6" I beam 2" journal sbc rods. Much better than heavy, soft factory rods. They work with an offset ground factory crank. Supposedly Procomp is making stroker SBO cranks soon.

Well they say there is no substitute for cubic inches....

and turbo and supercharger people - they are just adding more "cubic inches" to the same space, so yeah.

Good cylinder heads go a long way too. I don't know why sbc guys waste a cent on old junk heads. The LS heads flow stock what decent aftermarket heads flow. Roller cams and 10 to 1 compression with effcient chambers finish it out. What octane do you LS guys run on carbs?

Ill be running 87... what it calls for from the factory....

I'm sure it runs fine Beeter, with stock efi. Both my efi cars with 10 to 1 run fine on regular gas. I am curious how they run with puddle dumping Holleys and a set timing curve. I assume multiple curves can be used with that box.

Hahahaha! Getting a little bit snippy are we? lol

I'm sure the 403 is a strong motor, just needed some "massaging" to get power out of it. These LS motors flat out run - even bone stock. Beeterolds is gonna be running 11s and I'm going to get a converter and a cam one of these days and try to keep up with him!

I am saying EFI makes a big difference, pulls timing if detenation occurs. Beeter has ran very good times with Cutlass running the Olds engine. The LS must be special to run carbs and high compression without detenation on 87.

I'm only 10:1 - so not crazy compression. I try to run 91-93 octane.

As for carb puddling - maybe in Saskatoon, 🙂 but it just vaporizes here in the Florida heat!!!!

I think he meant fuel slobbering Holley which they do anywhere. None the less they work great at a race track. As always a lot is in the tune and combination. There is pics of a pump gas 403 gbody wheels up running 11s on realoldspower. On the static compression to octane LOTS of variables come into play. Heat, cam design, quench, combustion chamber design, atune, to name a few of the more important variables IMO.

My on 509 ran great on 89 for regular travel on an honest measured & calculated 10.0-1 static compression with a Q-jet. In fact after about 9,000 miles its was pulled and the bearings etc were inspected and we found no traces of detonation. It also had a good ahead of its time combustion chamber design very similar to what the LS heads use now. Same fireing order as an LS motor also. Although it has other head design problems. The Olds heads on the other hand were a very dated design.

That is my point. Holleys are great at the track, every day, not so much. I am thinking of trying the new non metal filled Demon's for the track. Couple in that with a less than ideal timing curve and a smallish stock cam. The cam is considerbly smaller in the 5.3, curious how they run on 87.
