What carb to get

The quadrajet that was put on at the factory was picked for the engine by engineers and it lasted decades so for a stock engine why do you want to experiment with a different carburetor. I would get a quadrajet that is the same as what the engine originally came with.
It has a edelbrock on it Now. But i don't think it's any good.

I would get a rebuild kit and go through it and if you don't know how to rebuild a carb there are plenty of manuals and videos on Youtube etc

It should be stamped on the carb.

Absolutely. There's so many different carb types out there, You have to be specific when buying a rebuild kit.

Throw the Edelbrock in the bush, a lot of people have issues with them. The 1900 625 cfm Street Demon is a good choice, heavily based off the Thermoquad, the Qjet's competition, it will need leaned out on a stock 305. A stock Qjet off a late 70's 305, rebuilt should be bang on.

The one thing with a quadrajet it takes a little dedication and time to learn how it works, how to rebuild it and how to tweak it. You'll find people saying the quadrajet is junk but you will never find anyone who has taken the time to teach themselves about the quadrajet complain about it. The quadrajet isn't a mystery, there are some good books on it that are easy to understand. I have both the Doug Roe and the Cliff Ruggles books that I often refer to when tweaking a quadrajet.

I rebuild qjets for fun. I like working on them. Holleys are more complicated with how they work than a qjet. Standard rebuild kit from quadrajetparts.com for YOUR carb number, (for a qjet, they sell edelbrock parts too if i remember right), with a new accel pump and float and you'd be good to go. Also a new power piston retaining bushing makes the whole process easier.
