Different tire diameters make for different axle rotation speed. The differential is where this discrepancy is realized. In a posi unit it sees this as wheel slip and tries to lock the axles together which kinda wouldn't work well with a large difference like that. So the clutches/cones in the limited slip unit get abused.

Curious how old of a tire? Surprisingly I have only seen old tires blow up twice. One was 15+ year old tires on s MG Midget and a 68 Thunderbird tire that sat in a garage for at least 20 years. When that front tire blew, they checked the other tires, there was 80 psi in the old bias ply tires! They lowered the pressure in the other ones and were lucky there was old minor damage on such a nice car. I need to replace my one ancient spare and check the dates on the other ones.

Any idea how old they are? Glad it didn't wreck anything

I had that same Tread Pattern Radial T/A's on my '79 GP in 1984 so I would guess they are old.
