They're both good motors. I like Olds better, Chevy guys like Chevy better. The real question you have to ask yourself is, are you an Olds guy or a Chevy guy?
If you own an Oldsmobile...the answer is pretty simple....lol.

Judging by most of the Cutlass owners on this site, the answer's 'Chevy guy'.....

Yeah....they just dont know what they're missin do they....lol?

Olds. The sbc in a non Chevy has been over done a billion times over. Chevys are great engines as well, but they belong in a Chevy. IMO.

If you do not care about brand loyalty run a Chevy. The benefits are for more in my opinion. Parts are WAY cheaper used and better. With olds your stuck with a small handful of vendors that make aftermarket heads, cranks, etc. The sky is the limit on both motors, everything is available but your dollar will take you much farther with a Chevy. Also look into your intended use for the engine. Are you drag racing and want 500hp? Buy a Chevy, when it grenades it will be much cheaper to replace. Do you want a 300hp cruiser? Either will work,

Ha ha, exactly. I know there are guys with all possible combinations up here, but the big differentiator seems to be, are you loyal to a particular brand, do you like your car and engine to match regardless of brand, or does it really not matter to you? Asking "Olds or Chevy" would tend to indicate that you fall into the third group. 🙂

My opinion is very biased because I'm an Oldsmobile guy. I would NEVER put any engine in a cutlass that is outside of the Oldsmobile engine family... I wouldn't buy a cutlass if it had anything else in it. I wouldn't even buy a cutlass with a factory Buick 231 in it lol.

This thread is funny...I'm sure if I searched there are many similar on this forum...
Olds seems to be the only line that anyone shakes their head &/Or sheds tears if the owner swaps a Chevy engine into it...
I don't recall many Buick & Pontiac owners demanding specific engines installed...Maybe I'm wrong... what would an Olds Fanatic do if they had a choice between driving a chevy powered Cutlass or just waiting a year until they can afford/aquire parts to build an Olds engine? I think I already know the answer, to me, its Not That Deep....as far as the argument that everyone has already built a SBC, wasn't the Cutlass by far the highest production g.body?? Doesn't that mean that 'EveryOne' has already owned/HotRodded a Cutlass? What options are available for a fuel injected Olds Engine with some decet power? ChaChing....I'm guessing you better call the banker!

Don't Get Me Wrong....

I am planning on building an Olds engine, hopefully a 455 will be making its way into my Cutlass... I've already begun collecting parts... But in the mean time I have Zero Problem installing my Built Chevy engine into the car...

In my opinion, Installing a GM engine in a GM car is Not even in the same planet as installing a ford 9" in a gBody...which doesn't bother me...

At the End Of The Day...ITS NOT MY CAR & I'm not here to judge....

Honestly its a motor you make out of it what you want. I almist install a sbc 350 in my car when my 307 went out. But my dad was saying I have his motor but acting differently. So I searched the yatd by my house and I found multiple olds motors 307, 350 widowed and non widowed...and a 455 c heads with a 1bbl I think it had...I picked a olds due to a easier swap and I wamtex something different...What I ended up with is whst I believe to be a 68 block with cr10 pistons, every one wont be as lucky as me, but it all comes down to each its own...

I agree. I'm an olds fan through and through and even my first tattoo was the Olds crest off my cutlass. It bothers though because when I first joined the forum every one said "Keep an Olds in an Olds" making it sound like finding an Olds motor was as easy as walking into a candy shop and saying I want 5 packs of gum.

It almost seems that when one person gets an Olds motor they suddenly think it should be that easy for any one else to get one just because they have one when really that's not the case at all. I would prefer to have a 350 rocket it my cutlass but will i hold my breath till i get one ? No. I'm quite content putting any GM motor in my Cutlass in order for it to move and drive because at the end of the day I would rather have a GM in car in my cutlass and have it move by itself than wait 1 to maybe 5 years to get an olds motor in it and let it rot away.

I just recently bought a chevy 350 for $100 and it works so in that case why not buy a chevy for my olds?

That's just my little rant though because I just don't think it matters what GM motor you have in your cutlass as long as it runs. If you can find an Olds motor more power to you but if you can't then people shouldn't force "KEEP OLDS IN OLDS!" down some one's throught. Mind you I would rather have a half dead 307 in an olds than an LS motor but that's because LS motors are over killed by every one.

..Well...if I loved Buicks or Pontiacs as much as I do Oldsmobiles...they would have the correct brand engine in the car.
We have learned to accept Buick v-6's in just about all Gbody cars because they came from the factory with em...but that doesnt mean it was logical or the best option. Most owners who bought these cars from the dealers didnt know or even care what motor was in it. I guess because I am old enough to remember when Oldsmobiles came with Oldsmobile engines, Buicks came with Buicks, etc....I just never accepted the practice that GM adopted in the late 70's/early 80's...and ever since. Its all fubar now.......even modern Jaguars have Ford motors in the engine bays.... :wtf: :blam:
