My opinion is very biased because I'm an Oldsmobile guy. I would NEVER put any engine in a cutlass that is outside of the Oldsmobile engine family... I wouldn't buy a cutlass if it had anything else in it. I wouldn't even buy a cutlass with a factory Buick 231 in it lol.

Id buy it....and swap it out!....

I would go with the 350 chevy. The olds is harder to find and harder to get parts for. Chevys are also usually cheaper and more abundant to find.
"Cheaper, easier, more abundant"....... kinda reminds me why we have no more manufacturing jobs in this country.....

I'm quite content putting any GM motor in my Cutlass in order for it to move and drive....

That's just my little rant though because I just don't think it matters what GM motor you have in your cutlass as long as it runs.

And that right there is the difference. I am NOT content putting just any GM motor in my Cutlass. My ideal is keeping my Olds an Olds, and yours is apparently to drive your Olds, regardless of the motor. The thing is, we're not talking about 1931 Cadillac V16s, it's going to be a LONG time before the supply of Oldsmobile motors is exhausted. Thankfully, there are guys who are ok with putting Chevy engines in their Cutlasses, which keeps the Olds motor supply high for guys like me. 😉

If you can find an Olds motor more power to you but if you can't then people shouldn't force "KEEP OLDS IN OLDS!" down some one's throught.

Ha ha, nobody is forcing anything down anybody's throat, the OP just asked for opinions. If I lived on a desert island and there was only a single Cutlass and a single SBC and no Olds motors, I'd probably go ahead and do the build...as long as there wasn't also a Cadillac motor, or a Buick motor, or a Pontiac motor... But this is America, and I'm keeping my Olds an Olds. 😀

Not everybody can afford an Olds. When I work on cars I play with such a small budget that anything but a chevy is out. I like tricked out engines, not factory engines. Trick an olds and take a mortgage out on your house  And then get the sh*t smoked out of you by a chevy with the same dollar amount. Sucks, I like olds, built a 455 and tweaked a 350 olds but until I have some serious cash to play with I won't build one again. Assuming you want to build something and not just a 300hp stocker. In that case an olds won't cost you much more. Hardcore olds guys are different kind of person, in a good way. And that is just fine. I understand both sides but my dollar dictates what I build.

I believe most of the time it comes down to cost and availability and since most people are on a budget when building their gbody and Chevy small blocks are very abundant and affordable which can not be said for the BOP engines.
Also the intent of the engine comes into play if you want bang for your buck horsepower then you go with a Chevy.
Now I have a BBC in a Monte but if that was not the gbody of my choice it would be in a Regal or Cutlass.
I've done many sbc transplants in gbodies and I consider that an upgrade from the 231 Buick that was in there or if came with a 305 then you just go bigger.
I think if GM had actually put desent Olds,Buick and Pontiacs in the gbodies we probably wouldn't be having this discussion but instead we received 307's,231's and 301's in their place, while 350 Chevy's were still being produced and put in everything the other brands were already done.
But I really do want to commend anyone that has that kind of brand loyalty and I think 455's in a Regal,Cutlass and Prix are some of the coolest builds. I love when I go to a car show and someone opens their hood and there is a BOP in there.
Another issue is alot of people are not only on a budget but they use their car as a daily driver which means if they need something they need to be able to walk in an auto parts store and walk out with a part not special order it.
For me I am loyal to the BBC brand regardless of the fenders it resides between.

I have a olds and ive havent had a problem with sourcing parts for my olds 350. Sbo's take all the same so pdetty much angthing crom a 260,307,350, & 403 fit. In regards to the custom crazy motors, what kinda of power or set-ups are you referring to? But when it comes down to the sbc vs sbo discuszion it all depends on what you want to do with car. Because both motors are great and capable...

X2.... I think that the only difference between the two is the availability or access to certain major components that may fail if the motor is neglected or used for drag racing. I prefer the stronger block and crank that already exists in a stock Olds. But as for actual expense of a stock build...I dont see the advantage of building a chevy motor over an olds. True, its not as easy to find an Olds motor, but they are out there, and can be bought without breaking the bank.

Really availability I think is the major issue here, if someone had a sbc and sbo engine in front of them needing the same amount of work I would definately go with the Olds especially if it is going to be a stock or mild performance build.
But around here the only source to find an Olds engine would be Craigslist since all the junkyards around here don't carry anything even in the 80's and alot of them are now dismantlers only so there are hardly any cars there, walk through junkyards are a dying breed around here.
And because they are not plentifull alot of people hang onto them and if they sell they want decent money for them.
I have a buddy that tore down a 455 Olds as a teenager and it's been in his parents garage ever since the early 90's.
He is pretty much broke and still refuses to sell it and plans on using it someday.
