I agree that a two pronged plan is needed that equally gives priority to exploring and developing domestic sources of oil and coal while an equal priority is to develop renewable and alternative energy resources.
Here in Wyoming we have enough coal that if converted to liquid fuels could replace all our imported oil at current rate of consumption for at least 300 years. The Germans started doing this in WWII and South Africa has been doing this since the 70's. We could develop oil shale here in Wyoming, and in Utah and Colorado. North Dakota and Eastern Montana have a newly discovered oil field equal to that of Soudi Arabia. These sources are not cheap to develop because they require special extraction techniques, but it could be done for less than $100.00/barrel.
This could all be done without too much harm to the environment. We have an oilfield 8 miles north of town, and if you were new here, you wouldn't even know it's there. Also, the antelope are safer there because you can't shoot around the rigs and pumps.
