Do you know if the car has ever been in an accident? A side impact to the rear wouldn't take much effort to tweak the frame. Those rails move a lot more than people think. Does the body mount appear to be broken from corrosion or from a forced break? Do you ever haul anything heavy in the bed? Have you ever looked at the body lines of the car or checked the panel gaps? There's just so many variable when you don't know the complete history of a vehicle.

Not sure if this could be possible, but a different approach from a backyard wanna-be mechanic..

Are the "Axle shafts" the same length? The distance from the Diff cover to the wheel hub......

Guessing but would assume they make different sizes..... Maybe the P.O. got hit and couldn't find the right size or was to cheap to put it back together properly?

sh*t, it's a chevy! Who knows what has happenned in the past, what day of the week it was made, Etc...Etc...
So, what I have done in the past, is just fab up a Panhard bar, 1-1/4" Minimum, use Stainless Heim Joints, get the 4140 Chrome Moly Tube from , say Art Morrison, fab up a couple mounts and tweak the rear end where you want it. Like this:

This is what I commonly do to trailers, have done with early chev trucks, done it with my Tahoe and if my new wagon needs it, it'll happen there too. I'm showing you trailer pictures for easy clarification. The bars are smaller here, It's not hard to do, just make sure your welds are structurally sound. If you don't weld, you'll have to find a shop that you trust to fix it right, but this is a sure way to locate your rear end. The longer the bar the better for arc range, but the longer the bar, the more limber it becomes, so it needs thickness to retain rigidity. This is an airbag, trailing arm, panhard setup.

If you want help with it, I'lll give you a hand. I'm in the shop for the rest of the day, so if you want, give me a buzz on my cell-425.239.5562 Matt

you owned it for that long & drive it everyday with no problems so it cant be that big of a deal. Throw a spacer on the side that sits in more to make up for the difference & roll out

crazy, my el camino has the exact same problem. same tire and all. drives fine but doesnt look right when you look at it.
i still havent figured this out cus i havent been driving it for quiet a while, im hoping you find a solution for this. it might be the same as mine.
