I've been on a relentless search for a Pontiac 455, maybe even a 400 if I can't find one. Maybe it's just where I live but they seem far and few these days. I'm fighting the urge to take the easy way out and just get an Olds 455 since they seem to be plentiful. Nothing against Olds, but I was really hoping to stay all Pontiac with this car.

I've come across a few 400 blocks too. The problem is people think they're sitting on a gold mine when you have no way of hearing it run or knowing if it's any good. I'm sorry, but I can't pay upwards of $350 for something that might be junk after I take it to the machine shop and discover that it's cracked.
What's wrong with this one? http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/pts/2086870212.html Your always going to run some risk with a 35 year old engine. You have to roll the dice! Personally I would go with a 400 block and buy a stroker kit to make it a 461! I would have, but I cheaped out and went a straight 400. :|

I must have overlooked that one. What is it that makes you lean towards the 400? Is it the smaller mains and ability to rev higher?
I located a 400/th400 combo for $350 and I'm waiting for him to get back to me. Don't know what year it is, only that it's a 2bbl. At this point I'm ready to buy it because I'm tired of looking and it's relatively close.
Even a running motor can be cracked somewhere, it's happened to me. Pontiacs dried up about 10-15 years ago. You NEVER see a V-8 Pontiac just sitting on the street anymore as all are either crushed or sitting in a yard/garage/barn. Those who have a big V-8 hold on to it waiting for gas prices to come down. I have 6 stashed and I went from 455 to 301 in my fishing car when gas hit $4 a gallon.

Luckily my woman has an Accord that I use as a daily to get to work. My "grown man car" is a mint '94 Deville that might get driven once a month, garaged now that it started snowing. I've come to terms with the fact that gas is never going to drop again. That's why I'm going to use an OD trans and just deal with it. There's no way I could have something with that many cubes as a daily.
