I'm getting ready to put a positive track unit in my 87 El Caimno. A discussion came up about the difference between a 4.10 and a 3.73 gear. In the opinion of the forum is the 4.10 better overall or is the 3.73? I won't be doing a lot of highway traveling but would like to make a 300 to 500 mile trip occasionally. I will also be adding a 350 which should produce around 300 horses or a little better. Info would be appreciated.

unless you're on the drag strip i don't see any reason to go over 3.73:1.
what trans do you have? if it's a th350 you'll want to go (numerically) lower than if it's a 200r4.

I got an option to get whatever will run the best. I currently have a stock 200r4. My buddy has a th350 and a 700r4. He is not real keen on the 200r4. What would be the best performance wise?
Thanks

in stock form, with the TV cable properly adjusted, the 200r4 has fewer problems than the 700r4. built they are both extremely good but i don't like the large drop from 1st gear to 2nd and i do like the better overdrive of the 200r4. unfortunately the 200r4 has an undeserved bad reputation. it came from people improperly adjusting the TV cable and blaming it on the trans.
if you're primarily on the drag strip the th350 is pretty much bulletproof.
but with 300HP i'd definately go with the 200r4 with a shift kit and a home rebuild. and 3.42 or 3.73 rear gears.

the more people you'll talk to, the more different answers you'll get!

I went 700R4 because i like the 3:06 first gear and was told by 3 reputable trannies builders that the 700R4 had more stamina for high torque then the 200R4 ...but like i said the more you'll ask......
more a matter of opinion !

i have 4.10's in my 2000 sierra, and it sucks. lol. true, it gets up and throws me around, but it sucks on the highway. i love it performance wise, but hate it economically. but like the others said, the difference between the 3.73's and the 4.10's are probably not going to make that big of a difference unless you are on the strip. good luck with whatever you decide on.

Depends on intended use. If you going to make a 300 mile trip, put in OD transmission - you'll be happy you did.

I ran a th350 with 3:42 and I hated it on the hwy.. I turned 3000 at 60mph. I replaced it with a 200-4R and I like it. I think 3:73 with a 200-4R is a nice setup. But if you don't mind turning hi rpms and less mpgs the 4:11s are alot of fun around town.

The 700R4 isn't a bad transmission, I didnt mind the drop off, and it went well with 3:73's, but it was slipping on me for about a year. I don't think are as good as a properly setup 200-4R.

I would still go with either one, but if you're replacing a th350, it's be alot easier to put a 200-4R in its place. I believe the 700R4 requires a shorter driveshaft.
