sure enough, G72 the lowest ratio GM put in a car! Not for long though 😀
Will the 2.14 fit in a housing that came with a 3.08 ( GU4)?

you WANT a 2.14:1? rear gear ....there's a first!
I have 13's on my cutlass. I'd like to get the rpms down a little on the freeway.

wow now I really need to find a rear for my car ... figured I'd never be able to GIVE away that differential .... would you be intertested in a 260 V-8 too? Would really make the car move like a snail.

Hey ... what is the best way to build a "budget" rear to handle say 400hp?

I'd get either of these

Awesome ... that's about what I'm looking for. Which one of those do you think would be the best bang for the buck for say a 400-ish HP build?

well if money is no factor the 9" is stronger

the 9" inch is stronger but heavier too...

the 9" has another avantage..they don't use c clips and although you can get c clip eliminators for the 8.5 rear end they leak so they are a waste of money...

You could probably build a 7.5 for a lot less...
~$250 for new axles...
$300-$500 for aftermarket posi, a little less for factory clutch-type...

This way you know you'd have new parts, and not ones that people have beaten up on over the years. Remember the $800+ you're paying for the 8.5" is 75% of the time a bone stock unit that's used, not rebuilt. Rebuild the 7.5" you already have with good parts and you'll be fine with 400hp.

Heck, I beat on my box-stock peg-leg 2.29 all last summer with 350+hp and didn't break anything 😉
