Hi guys !

I have an problem with my wipers :
they work well but sometimes they don't. Sometimes when I put the switch on, they don't go up, but if I help them go up with my hand, then they start working good.
I was thinking I would be the wiper motor which sometimes doesn't get enough torque to start the movement ?
What do you think about ?

And the other problem is that I only get 2 speeds, I can't put a delay to have intermittent wipers ? How can I fix this ? what is the part name to change ?

Thanks for your answers

Hi guys,
Today I've made some tests :

- I disconnected the wiper transmission from the motor, and I tested the motor alone, it worked fine, every time I tested it. I tried to move the wiper transmission with my hand and it's pretty difficult, is it normal ? I still think that the wiper motor has not enough torque to start the movement of the wiper every time.. I don't know what to do now ?

- For the intermittent wipers : i've found this diagram which shows I must have a green wire.

I found it behind the switch.

And I found it near the wiper motor, but it's hooked to nothing.. I don't know where to connect it ?

For the moment, if I put the swith on delay, it doest the same speed like when I put on low.

I have seen on rockauto that there are wiper motors with or without wiper delay, so maybe I have a wrong motor ?

I have just the 2 speed wipers in my car and I was recently looking for a replacement because I felt my wipers were getting slower. I believe it was the autozone website and a motor listed for my car was cheap because it did not have the delay on it. Others were listed with the delay. My guess is you might be right that you have just the basic wiper motor and not one with the delay. If I remember correctly the basic motor was half the price of the delay version as far as the autozone website was priced. Previous owner might have went the cheaper route?

Here is a pic of a dealy wiper motor....I can only access so much from work here..or I'd draw circles on things

If you look at the black washer cover...the post that runs up and down (bottom left tab) that is where the green wire connects. It's hard to tell from your pic of the wiper motor if that tab is there.

if you are going to remove the wiper motor the easy way to do it is just remove the top 2 10mm bolts and leave the bottom bolt in place. You can pull the motor up from the rubber grommet without damaging it and slide the motor onto it when installing the motor

hi guys!
first thank you all for your answers !

The wiper motor you show me has a pin for the delay wipers, but it has also washer on it. And I don't want to have the washer on it because I have a separate washer pump which is working good so I would prefer not change it !
as you can see on this pic :

so the one you show me on rockauto is about 100$ :
A-1 CARDONE 401681 {#22048344} Reman Info
Front; Complete with Pulse Relay & Timing Switch; with Wiper Delay; Motor with Washer Pump

http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=32417&cc=1222377&jsn=435&jsn=435

but on rockauto I also see another one which is written :
A-1 CARDONE 40168 {#4961608} Reman Info
Front; with One Red Wire From Under Relay; with Wiper Delay

http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=32416&cc=1222377&jsn=434&jsn=434

Maybe I need this one, with no washer but delay. But on the pics of this one, I don't see any pin to connect my green wire ?

and what does mean "one red wire from under relay" ?

Thanks

Hi guys !!
So does someone know if I should take the 40168 but I don't see were to connect the green delay wire ?

Or should I take the complete 401681 with the washer pump, and not hook the washer pump (I got already an aftermarket one which is working fine), because I know where to hook the green delay wire on this model ??

Mickey PM'd me and here is my reply: Hi Mickey. From what I read you have an original delay system with the delay dash mounted switch which is very rare. You are correct that the green wire controls the delay. It seems that someone messed with the wiper motor over time. Using a separate washer pump is fine, as the washer function has nothing to do with the delay function. However you must have a delay equipped wiper motor to get the delay function. Since you say the current motor has a hard time operating and no delay then I feel you need a whole new motor with delay. Make no mistake- the motor MUST be a delay motor because there are special delay components built in. I feel someone maybe swapped a regular motor in your car and even the washer was bad or missing, that explains the separate washer pump. So I would go ahead and get the wiper motor that is specifically for the delay wipers. Get the one with the pump built in. (401681?) You do not need to use it but it is good to have it. You may need it down the line. I assume you are using the pump trigger wire that normally goes to the motor to operate your current pump. It is easy to reconnect it to where it belongs at a later date. But get a fresh wiper motor assembly with delay. You did not mention the year of the car but since you have the switch on the dash I can assume it is older than '83. That is important because there are two different systems. One is negative switched (yours) and the other is positive switched ('84 and up). They are not interchangeable even though they use the same color codes on the wires. The components for the negative switched systems are getting hard to find and expensive, so get what you can now. The dash delay switch you have is very, very, rare. I hope I helped, feel free to ask any questions, Regards, Mark.

Thank you very much for your answer Mark !
You are right, I have a 1980 oldsmobile cutlass supreme brougham so it should be a negative switched.
I think I have this delay wiper option because my car is a brougham finition.
Thank you for your help, I am going to order the full wiper motor with washer pump included (401681) and I will continue using my aftermarket washer as long as it works.

I could understand not using the standard cam operated washer pump. They were junk and don't seem to last that long. I guess that's why the later version wiper motor used the built in electric washer pump. Not great, but are still an improvement over the early version.

My dad's old '71 Skylark also used the same type of washer pump. I converted it to an aftermarket electric pump using a momentary button/ switch.
