When my brother and I restored his 78 Z28 it had a 2.41 in it. We wanted to put the correct 3.42 back in it. At the time (9 years ago) it was our understanding the 3.42 wouldn't fit the 2.41 housing. We are talking about an 8.5 and I'm not saying I'm sure our understanding was correct. We ended up buying a complete rear end out of an 81 Z28 that had 3.42 gears in it.

yea, sorry.... when I saw drop-in, I assumed entire axle housing swap... my bad o_O
Yeah. Should've been a tad more specific. I do know that they make ready to fit housings. And after looking at the price of dolling up my 7.5, I might as well just buy either a 12 bolt or 9 inch built to my specs.

Can a 3 series carrier be installed in a housing that had a 2 series carrier in it stock?

Yes, in both the 7.5 and the 8.5, you were lead to believe the wrong thing. The carrier is the only difference.

The 80's Astro Vans are mostly 3.23 gears with some being 3.42's but mostly open carriers. That is where my current gears with yukon spiders are from. S-10's should be similar but betting most will be the gov bomb posi.

All of your options that involve swapping carriers require setting up the rear for at least backlash. But it is quite easy and the only specialty tools needed are a dial indicator on a magentic base and caliper.

Have you considered one of these :

We have a spare complete axle in the basement that we used for a full season. It has the 28 spline Torsen, a set of S10 2WD axles and set of 3.73 gears in the stock G-Body housing. We have less than $500 tied in the whole thing with a new bearing kit. It worked great and needed one modification to handle all of the junkyard parts. We had to shim out the brake backing plates using a piece of 1/4" steel to accomodate the longer S10 axles.

Where are you located?

I don't know why my post was disliked. The Astro Van's are an easy and cheap source, along with S-10's for decent 7.5" gear ratios. I would seriously swap the soft weak spider gears, which I did.

Most likely a fat finger accident on a phone.
